China, 1662-1722. Each heavily potted, of rectangular form, the lower section with a stepped foot rim, while the upper stand presents a symmetrically modeled cornice. The side faces pierced with apertures of various geometric forms, some latticed, and painted in bright green and yellow enamels, displaying an array of decorative geometric patterns, with one stand distinguished by lush bamboo branches. The top of each stand adorned with an irregular patch of green enamel, while the underside remains unglazed, revealing the natural buff-colored ceramic beneath. (2)Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Fair condition with expected wear and firing-inherent irregularities, such as pitting, hairline cracks, kiln grit, and light warping. Evidence of breakage with subsequent signs of restoration and repainting. Shallow surface scratches and a visible chip to the foot rim. Weight: 7,026 g (total)Dimensions: Height 17.1, Length 25.3 cm (each)The familles verte, rose, jaune, and noire are French terms historically used in the West to classify Qing dynasty Chinese porcelain according to the dominant color of the enamel palette. These wares were first categorized as 'famille verte' and 'famille rose' by the French art historian and collector Albert Jacquemart in 1862. 'Famille verte' porcelain was produced primarily during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722), whereas 'famille rose' gained prominence in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The majority of this porcelain was manufactured in Jingdezhen, with a significant portion intended for export to Europe. However, some of the finest examples were commissioned for the Imperial court.Introduced around 1680 during the Kangxi period, 'famille verte' is distinguished by a predominance of green in various shades, combined with other overglaze colors. It evolved from the earlier Wucai style, or five-color technique. 'Famille verte' enjoyed widespread popularity until the 1720s, when it was largely supplanted by 'famille rose', which offered a broader chromatic range. Production continued in smaller quantities during subsequent periods, and its appeal experienced a revival in the West in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Literature comparison:Compare a related famille verte porcelain stand, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, 1662-1722, 15.2 cm long, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number C.1091-1910.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 25 January 2010, lot 416Price: USD 2,500 or approx.
