拍品描述 翻译
A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE 'LION' WEIGHT, HAN DYNASTYChina, 206 BC-220 AD. Superbly carved in the round as a recumbent beast, its fur meticulously rendered in varying degrees of relief. The powerful head tilted to the left, as if glancing backward, defined by a pair of bulging eyes and a prominent snout with an openwork gaping mouth revealing sharp fangs and a coiled tongue. The semi-translucent stone of an attractive interplay of white and russet tones, punctuated by dark patches and cloudy inclusions.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with surface wear and natural age-related imperfections, such as inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into small hairlines. Light traces of weathering and erosion. Scattered minute nicks and faint surface scratches. The jade surface with minor areas of soil encrustation.Weight: 392.1 gDimensions: Length 8.6 cmWeights of this type are believed to have served the Imperial family and high nobility during the Han dynasty to secure mats laid on the floor, which functioned as seating. Corners of these mats were often anchored with gilt-bronze weights or, in exceptional cases, with jade carvings of great value. Weights of this kind were typically produced in sets of four and fashioned in the form of animals or human figures.Expert's note: The present lot exemplifies the highest standards of Han dynasty craftsmanship. The lion exhibits a rhythmically carved composition with reliefs of varying depth and finely incised details. This reveals exceptional skill in creating a naturalistic and at the same time highly dynamic three-dimensional figure.Literature comparison: Compare a related jade belt buckle with dragons and three-headed turtle carved in relief, dated to the Eastern Han dynasty, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, image number K1C001328N000000000PAC.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 30 May 2017, lot 54 Price: HKD 2,340,000 or approx. EUR 314,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : An exceptionally rare jade mythical bird scroll weight, Eastern Han Dynasty or later Expert remark: Compare the related function, style, material, and manner of carving. Note the smaller size (6.5 cm).
