The shallow dish is delicately potted with straight sides and a flat interior, raised on a flared, hollow, trumpet-shaped stem foot. The interior is left plain and white, conveying an elegant and restrained aesthetic. The exterior of the dish is encircled with stylized lotus-petal lappets, while the stem foot is vividly painted with the ‘carp transforming into a dragon’ motif: above turbulent waves and stylized cliffs (jiangya), an auspicious dragon coils dynamically across the water’s surface, as a carp leaps from the surging waves below, all interspersed with ruyi-shaped cloud scrolls. The composition is animated and powerful. A worn area to the interior of the foot suggests the former presence of a reign mark. The motif of yuhua long (carp transforming into a dragon) is deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. As recorded in the San Qin Ji, each spring carp swim upstream to the Dragon Gate on the Yellow River; those able to leap the gate are transformed into dragons amid clouds and thunder. The subject thus symbolizes success in the civil examinations and the fulfillment of one’s ambitions. This rare type was first created at the imperial kilns during the Kangxi reign and is known only from the Kangxi and Qianlong periods. Based on its form and decoration, such high-footed dishes were likely made for imperial court use rather than as standard official wares, accounting for their scarcity and refined, noble character. The form derives from Ming dynasty high-footed dishes and bowls, itself inspired by dou vessels of the Shang and Zhou bronze traditions. The present example is finely proportioned, with a dense, hard porcelain body and a lustrous glaze. The composition is balanced and assured, while the cobalt-blue decoration is rich and vibrant, with subtle tonal diffusion. The painting is executed with exceptional finesse, employing gradations of tone to achieve depth and spatial rhythm, transcending the flatness of conventional blue-and-white decoration. Using cobalt blue alone, the artist achieves a visual richness comparable to polychrome wares, exemplifying the refined aesthetic ideals of Qianlong imperial porcelain.
