英文长介绍:Carved from rare and highly prized zitan, the present throne chair embodies the gravitas and refinement associated with imperial furnishings of the Qianlong court. The wood is exceptionally dense and resonant, its surface enriched over centuries with a soft, lustrous patina of remarkable depth and warmth, smooth to the touch and evocative of the restrained opulence reserved for objects of the highest status. The seat is fitted with a finely woven rattan soft mat, the tightly interlaced strands forming a supple and breathable surface that contrasts elegantly with the solidity of the zitan frame. This harmonious balance of rigidity and pliancy reflects both practical consideration and aesthetic sophistication, a hallmark of Qing imperial furniture design. The backrest constitutes the visual and symbolic focus of the chair and is carved with extraordinary precision and refinement. Within the upper openwork panel, a pair of bats flank and support the shou (longevity) character, their wings delicately articulated in flight. Through the rebus of fu (bats) and shou, the motif expresses the auspicious wish for “abundant blessings and long life,” a favored emblem of the Qianlong court. The lower panel is centered with a dynamic composition of a bat clasping a pair of fish in its mouth. The fish are finely rendered with clearly defined scales and animated tails, conveying the auspicious meaning of nian nian you yu (“abundance year after year”) combined with enduring good fortune. Between the two registers is a stylized jade pendant motif, incised with flowing cloud scrolls, alluding to the purity and moral virtue of the gentleman, while surrounding auspicious clouds coil and billow, enveloping the imagery in a halo of benevolent resonance. Together, these motifs integrate blessings, longevity, abundance, and virtue into a single, coherent symbolic program reflecting imperial aspirations for lasting prosperity and stability. The carving is executed in a masterful interplay of high and low relief, with crisp yet fluid lines and an extraordinary attention to detail, exemplifying the Qianlong ideal that workmanship should be exhaustive and ornamentation abundant yet meaningful. The arms and aprons are carved with continuous angular guai zi scrolls, their rhythmic geometry reinforcing the structure while introducing visual lightness and contrast to the richly carved backrest. This balance between ornate and restrained elements typifies the refined aesthetic sensibility of Qianlong-period court furniture. Fashioned from imperial timber and executed with consummate craftsmanship, this Qianlong zitan throne chair stands as a commanding example of Qing court furniture at its zenith. More than a functional seat, it is a sculptural expression of authority, ritual, and auspicious symbolism. In its presence, one is immediately struck by the aura of imperial dignity and the harmonious convergence of material excellence, technical virtuosity, and symbolic depth.
