英文长介绍:The censer is lavishly gilt overall, the gilding applied in a rich, even layer with a warm, lustrous sheen, imparting a commanding sense of imperial opulence characteristic of Qianlong court production. The pair of arched handles is cast in high relief as confronting dragons chasing a flaming pearl, their sinuous bodies powerfully modeled with crisply defined scales and claws, and their expressions imbued with vigor and authority. The dragons perch along the rim of the vessel, conforming strictly to the dragon iconography reserved for imperial use during the Qianlong reign, serving as a definitive marker of courtly origin. The mouthrim is encircled with a continuous key-fret (leiwen) band, symbolizing unending continuity, while the neck is finely chased with square-holed cash-coin motifs, conveying wishes for enduring wealth and prosperity. The body is divided into shaped reserves, each meticulously chased with a dynamic scene of immortals celebrating longevity, inspired by the legendary birthday festivities of the Queen Mother of the West. The figures include the Eight Immortals, the Three Star Gods of Fortune, Emolument, and Longevity (Fu, Lu, Shou), the Twin Immortals of Harmony, and numerous attendant youths. Billowing auspicious clouds surround the figures, whose gestures and expressions are rendered with remarkable individuality and narrative clarity, demonstrating the extraordinary level of craftsmanship and the no-expense-spared standards of the imperial workshops (Zaobanchu). The censer rests on three short feet, each chased with leaf motifs, lending a sense of stability and understated elegance. The base is framed with a key-fret border enclosing a regular-script inscription reading “Da Ming Xuande liu nian Gongbu shangshu chen Wu Bangzuo jianzao” (“Supervised by the Minister of Works Wu Bangzuo in the sixth year of the Xuande reign of the Ming dynasty”). Surrounding the inscription are three further gilt dragons amid swirling clouds, an intentional evocation of celebrated Xuande-period censers and a clear manifestation of the Qianlong court’s aesthetic ideal of “emulating antiquity while surpassing it.” Exhibiting a harmonious balance of form, dense ornamentation, and deeply auspicious symbolism, the present censer unites advanced casting, gilding, and chasing techniques at the highest level. Conceived as an imperial court vessel, it faithfully inherits the formal legacy of Xuande bronzes while elevating it through the technical virtuosity and symbolic richness unique to the Qianlong period. Preserved in excellent condition, this censer represents a rare and important example of Qianlong imperial metalwork, distinguished by its historical significance, artistic refinement, and outstanding collectability.
