Woven on a rich blue silk ground, the present pair of panels is executed using traditional Chinese embroidery techniques, depicting a harmonious array of auspicious motifs symbolizing blessings of longevity, happiness, and prosperity. One panel portrays perforated scholar’s rocks amid blossoming narcissus and lingzhi fungus, an imagery associated with wishes for immortality and longevity (lingxian zhushou). A magpie alights gracefully within the scene, animating the composition and conveying the rebus “joy upon the brows” (xi shang meishao). The companion panel centers on a flourishing pomegranate tree, its branches laden with abundant fruit, an emblem of fertility and many descendants. Above the tree are embroidered four bats—a visual pun for fu (blessings)—while lingzhi fungus grows from a scholar’s rock below, together forming auspicious wishes for manifold blessings and spiritual fulfillment (duo zi duo fu, fu zhi xin ling). The two panels are closely related in style and conception, forming a unified visual narrative of interconnected blessings and enduring prosperity. The embroidery is meticulous yet restrained, sumptuous without excess, combining the dignified refinement associated with court taste and the elegant lyricism favored by the literati. The pair exemplifies the canonical aesthetic of Qing dynasty bird-and-flower embroidery. The mid-Qing period represents the pinnacle of traditional Chinese embroidery, marked by technical mastery, stylistic consistency, and exceptional quality. Surviving works of this caliber are limited, and complete, well-preserved pairs of vertical panels are particularly rare. The panels retain their original mounting and are in excellent overall condition. The embroidery shows no loose threads, no significant losses, and no extensive fading. The blue ground remains even and vibrant, with the embroidered details crisp and legible. Minor traces of age are consistent with time and do not detract from the overall presentation or collectability. Distinguished by superb craftsmanship, auspicious subject matter, and clear period characteristics, this pair is well suited for display in a formal interior or refined studio setting. It represents an exceptional example of high-quality Qing embroidery, combining historical significance, artistic merit, and strong appeal to collectors of fine textiles.
