The Inner Doors Inscribed with Poems and Sealed with Qianlong Reign Marks. This finely crafted rectangular portable chest is made of precious zitan wood and constructed in a hinged, double-opening form. The exterior is fitted with gilt-bronze mounts, including a carrying handle and hinges, lending the piece a dignified and stately appearance. All four sides are inset with cloisonné enamel panels, delicately decorated with blossoming peonies, plum and chrysanthemum sprays, rendered in gold wire against a turquoise-blue ground. The enamels are richly colored and finely graduated, exemplifying the opulent and elegant court style of cloisonné production during the Qianlong period. Upon opening, the interior faces of the twin doors are each inscribed with gilt-calligraphy poems written in regular script. The calligraphy is refined and well-proportioned, while the poetic texts extol the purity of flowering plants and the beauty of the changing seasons, imbued with a refined literati sensibility. Adjacent to the inscriptions are impressed a Qianlong reign mark and imperial seals, carefully arranged so that calligraphy, poetry, and seals form a harmonious and balanced composition, strongly conveying the imperial character of the work. The interior is fitted with a symmetrical duobaoge compartmentalized arrangement, with shelves of varying heights designed to accommodate precious objects. The partitions are finely pierced with scrolling foliate motifs, demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship. Such portable duobaoge chests were likely intended for imperial use during the emperor’s travels, combining both practical function and aesthetic refinement. The interior surfaces retain traces of natural wear consistent with historical use. Integrating zitan woodwork, cloisonné enamel, calligraphy, poetry, and gilt-bronze craftsmanship, this exceptional chest reflects the Qianlong emperor’s taste for scholarly elegance and technical sophistication. Extremely rare in survival, it represents a masterpiece of Qing court artistry and is often referred to as an “imperial toy box,” much favored by the Qianlong Emperor.Closed: H: 14 1/2 in (37 cm); W: 15 7/8 in (40.3 cm); D: 7 7/8 in (20.2 cm)Open: W: 31 3/4 in (80.6 cm)清 乾隆 紫檀掐絲琺瑯花卉紋手提多寶格箱 雙扇內門飾御題詩並鈐“乾隆”款印此箱以名貴紫檀木製成,長方體,對開式結構,上設銅鎏金提梁及合頁,形制端莊穩重。 From a Southern California family estate, offered by the descendants. $20,000
