拍品描述 翻译

A Korean Bronze Figure of a Seated Shaman-Amida Buddha Preaching, Early Joseon Period, Circa 16th Century 朝鮮王朝早期 阿弥陀佛说法銅像 Early Choson Period, circa 16th Century Depicted seated in a preaching posture. The serene countenance marked by gently downcast eyes and a subtle, compassionate smile reflecting both the spiritual tranquility of the Buddha and the distinctive mystical character associated with Korean shamanistic traditions. The layered folds of the robe cascade gracefully over the knees, and the garment’s edges are adorned with elegant patterns. The hollow cast bronze figure is seated in lotus position with right foot resting on left thigh, elbows at sides, right hand palm outward in front of chest with middle finger flexed to join thumb. The chin is heavy, the mouth small and low-set, eyes slit-like with bulging eyebrows. The head supports a five pointed crown or “monk’s hat.” The ears are very long and molded in a somewhat mannered and formalized style typical of the late Koryo period. The robe covers both shoulders and the chest is covered with three strands of suspended jewels. Long pendant sleeves fall to the base, which is formed by the everted edges of the robe. The robe covers legs to ankles. Traces of lacquer priming and gilt. Note: This bronze is a very rare example of the fusion of Korean Buddhism and Shamanism at the beginning of the Joseon period. Wearing the five pointed monk’s cap signifying “The Five Directions,” the Amida Buddha evolves into a shamanistic guardian figure. The Amida mudra, with upraised right hand and lowered left hand, thumb and middle fingers touching, indicates the welcoming of those who will be born into the lowest sector of the middle range of births. This degree of birth is the sixth of nine possibilities of rebirth in Paradise, and is meant for those beings who are close to attaining arhatship. Height 18 1/2 x width 10 in., 47 x 25.5 cm.
