Born in Kassel, Edgar Worch began his career working for his uncle, Adolphe Worch (1843-1915) who sold Chinese and Japanese antiquities in Paris. After the First World War, during which his business was confiscated by the French and he was wounded at Verdun, he founded his own dealership in Berlin specializing in Chinese ceramics. The couple later relocated to Geneva in 1932 and to New York in 1938. Works from their collection, including the present lot, were sold at three Christie's New York sales in 1994, and Edgar Worch also donated seven Chinese ceramics to the British Museum. The Chinese Porcelain Company was founded in 1984 by Pierre Durand and Khalil Rizk. The gallery's focus has been on quality above all, from Old Master paintings to European furniture, Venetian glass to contemporary artisan-designed objects and Asian works of art, with a particular emphasis on Chinese porcelain. Together, their partnership created one of New York's most prestigious venues for sourcing rare and beautiful fine and decorative arts. From 1985 to 2000, the Company curated thirty-three specialized exhibitions, each accompanied by a richly illustrated and thoroughly researched catalog designed to educate and inspire its clientele. Synonymous with excellence and connoisseurship, the Company's influence can be seen to this day in leading museums throughout the United States and distinguished collections around the world. The Jie Rui Tang Collection, devoted exclusively to Kangxi porcelain, was built over the course of nearly forty years by the American software industry executive and prominent collector Jeffrey P. Stamen and is widely regarded as one of the most important assemblies of Kangxi wares ever formed. The collection comprised over 700 pieces and included some of the finest surviving examples of Kangxi porcelain in the world today. The Jie Rui Tang Collection was dispersed in two highly successful single-owner sales at Sotheby's New York in March 2018 and March 2019.Weight: 649 gDimensions: Length 20.4 cmThe present elongated form with rounded ends is modeled after an Islamic metal prototype known from the 13th century, which was often richly chased and inlaid with gold and silver. Originally closely modeled after the Islamic form, the shape gradually changed to suit the requirements of Chinese calligraphers. Furthermore, decoration on pen boxes include motifs that conveyed auspicious messages, as seen on the present example. Chinese porcelain interpretations of the form were first made at the imperial kilns in Jingdezhen during the early Ming dynasty and continued to be popular well into the Qing dynasty. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related green-ground famille verte box from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Miscellaneous Enamelled Porcelains. Plain Tricoloured Porcelains, Hong Kong, 2009, pl. 217.
