拍品描述 翻译
A TWO-COLOR CINNABAR LACQUER INCENSE STAND, QING DYNASTYChina, 1644-1912. Of square form with canted corners, raised on four elegantly curved and pierced legs terminating in hoof feet and supported on a pedestal base. Below the wide apron with an indented lower edge and narrow waist, the finely carved top is worked in relief against a black-lacquered ground, depicting two scholars in conversation upon a rocky cliff within a mountainous river landscape, dotted with lush trees and swirling clouds. The scene is enriched with various diapered patterns and framed by an intricate lotus scroll. The sides of the top are decorated with a band of confronted C-scrolls enclosing flowerheads, above further bands of floral scroll and lotus petals. The apron, legs, and base are richly carved with peony blossoms and scrolling foliage.Provenance: From an old private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired before 1931 and thence by descent. Condition: Good condition with old wear, traces of use, manufacturing irregularities, expected minor cracks, tiny nicks, light surface scratches, minute chips and small losses to edges, two minor old repairs at the base.Weight: 4.7 kg Dimensions: Length 41 cm, Height 46.5 cm Incense stands were often part of wealthy households and were also used in both religious and secular contexts, serving a variety of purposes, as contemporaneous paintings and woodblock prints illustrate. Positioned in the center of a shrine or in a room, such stands often supported incense burners. The Buddhist world was thought of as being suffused with clouds and wondrously fragrant incense, creating magical realms that uplifted and purified the spirit; incense carried the piety and the desire of the worshipers to the gods and brought down the deities' purifying breath. It thus created the ideal mood to sustain a great debate between the bodhisattva and the learned layman and spreads their wisdom throughout the world.Incense was not just used during the performance of religious rituals; Sothern Song connoisseur Zhao Xigu, in his guidebook focusing on the scholar's elegant taste, has a chapter on the antique zither referring to the burning of incense whilst playing. Incense purified and concentrated the mind, producing that exaltation necessary for both playing and appreciating music; see Sarah Handler, The Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Hong Kong, 2001, p. 297. Stands also supported a variety of other objects including miniature gardens and antiques.Expert's note: The small size of the stand made it appropriate for use on a tabletop, day bed, or kang platform. The Manchu court and aristocracy absorbed Ming taste for highly decorated lacquer furniture and this elaborately carved Qing-dynasty incense stand draws on early Ming concepts for both its form and sumptuous decoration. See a related earlier tabletop incense stand, dated c. 1425, 42.6 cm high, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 80.89.Literature comparison: Compare a related cinnabar tabletop incense stand, 45.1 cm high, dated to the Qianlong period, in the Bowers Museum, Santa Ana, accession number 2022.7.3.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 22 March 2024, lot 1184 Price: USD 50,400 or approx.
