Expert's note: Bovine horn carvings, probably using water-buffalo horn, with lacquered and gilt Wanli marks such as the present lot are exceptionally rare. Compare a related horn carving of Budai, Wanli mark and period, with similar six-character mark encircled by key-fret along the rim, formerly from the Sackler Collection, illustrated by Jan Chapman, The Art of Horn Carving in China, London, 1999, p. 230, pls. 325-326. See also a related Budai horn group, Wanli mark corresponding to 1577 and of the period, formerly in the George and Mary Bloch Collection and sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 23 October 2005, lot 85, illustrated ibid., p. 231, pls. 326-327.China, 1573-1619. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a few natural age cracks, light rubbing to the gilding, and a few tiny nicks. The top and bottom with subtle plugs inherent to the manufacture.Weight: 412 g (excl. stand), 499 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 16.3 cm (excl. stand), 18.3 cm (incl. stand)With a fitted, finely carved and open worked stand in the form of tree branches and rockwork, dating from the Qing dynasty. (2)According to tradition, the legend of the Hehe Erxian originates with the Tang dynasty poet-monks Hanshan and Shide. Early representations depict them as disheveled figures with broad smiles, often shown carrying a box, stalks of grain, or lotus stems. Over time, their iconography evolved into the more familiar image of two laughing boys holding a lotus stem and a covered box, collectively known as the Two Immortals of Harmony and Unity. The box (he) is a homonym for harmony. In the present example, the box is carved closed, symbolizing unity and togetherness, and conveying auspicious wishes for marital harmony and happiness.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 November 2016, lot 37Price: HKD 425,000 or approx.
