A GILT-COPPER AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL FIGURE OF A ROOSTER, QIANLONG PERIODChina, 1736-1795. Finely modeled standing, with folded wings and the head turned to one side, the plumage delicately enameled in yellow, blue, red, and black, with the feathers well detailed in gilt wire. The beak, legs, and feet are richly gilt.Provenance: Galerie Lamy, Brussels, Belgium, by 2015. The collection of Gert Mosler, Amsterdam, Netherlands, acquired from the above and thence by descent. A copy of a certificate of authenticity from Galerie Lamy, dated 20 March 2015, confirming the dating above, and stating an insurance value for the present lot of EUR 6,500 (or approx. EUR 9,000 converted and adjusted for inflation), accompanies the lot. Galerie Lamy is an established gallery known for its scholarly approach to Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and European ceramics and works of art, with particular expertise in Ming and Qing dynasty objects. Founded in Brussels by Georges Lamy and his son Hugues-Jean Lamy, the gallery reflects the latter's academic training in museology, sinology, and codicology. Works offered by Galerie Lamy are selected from important European collections, emphasizing quality, authenticity, and well-documented provenance. Gert Mosler was born into a prominent German-Jewish banking family. His grandfather Georg owned the modernist Villa Mosler in Neubabelsberg, designed in 1925-26 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The family fled Germany in 1933 following the Nazi rise to power, and their property was subsequently expropriated. Raised in the Netherlands, Mosler studied law at Leiden University and was admitted to the Amsterdam bar in 1956. He built a distinguished legal career, later serving as of counsel at the Amsterdam firm Stibbe, specializing in corporate and financial law. Alongside his professional work, he formed a private collection of Chinese works of art and was active in Dutch civic life, serving as chairman of the Amsterdam Old Course golf club in the 1990s.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, tiny nicks, small dents, few minuscule losses to enamels, rubbing and minor losses to gilt, small touchups to beak. The tail with two areas of sensitive restoration using gold lacquer.Weight:731 g Dimensions: Height 16.5 cm (excl. stand), 18 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated metal stand. (2)The rooster is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and is traditionally associated with courage and faithfulness. It is a popular decorative motif in Chinese art, frequently employed in small sculptural forms such as incense burners. Cloisonné enamel representations of roosters, however, are rare and only a limited number of examples have been published. A closely comparable, naturalistically modeled cloisonné rooster, gifted by David David-Weill to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, is illustrated in Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties (New York, 2011), p. 280, pl. 111.Literature comparison:Compare a pair of closely related cloisonné enamel roosters, dated to the Qianlong period, included in the exhibition The Grand Gathering of the Century, Zodiac Heads from the Yuanmingyuan and Important Treasures, Indra and Harry Banga Gallery, City University of Hong Kong, 2023.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 23 May 2024, lot 96 Mid-Estimate: GBP 125,000 or approx.
