拍品描述 翻译
Published: René van Dijk, Serenity. Typology of South East Asian Buddha Art Styles, Asian Art Collection, 2022, p. 154-157.Expert's note: A discussion by the curator of The Buddha Gallery, Steve Lombardi, notes, “I had thought this was a very early Thai walking Buddha until I saw a few Indian prototypes. Through my research, I realized this piece was from hundreds of years earlier and originated in India (and is far rarer)… It took 20 years to figure this piece out, as I had been looking at it as Southeast Asian, as a crossover from Dvaravati to early Sukhothai, rather than recognizing it as earlier and from India. The Gupta style was actually a precursor to the Dvaravati style and served as one of the templates for much of Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture for the next 1,000+ years.”Buddha Shakyamuni is finely cast with his legs pressed together, appearing to lurch forward, the right hand held in vitarka mudra and the left lowered in abhaya mudra, clutching the hem of his diaphanous sanghati that drapes across both shoulders, flaring downward in a gently undulating hemline and revealing the slender outlines of the body. The gently rounded face bears a serene expression, with heavy-lidded eyes beneath incised arched brows centered by an urna, above a broad nose and pursed lips forming a calm smile, the hair arranged in tight curls over a gently domed ushnisha.Provenance: An old private collection in Germany, by 1997. The Buddha Gallery, Ukiah, California, USA, acquired from the above. Collection of René van Dijk, Delft, Netherlands, acquired from the above in 2018.The Buddha Gallery, based in Ukiah, California, USA, is a private dealership specializing in Buddhist and Asian religious sculpture. The gallery was founded and curated by Steve Lombardi, a long-time dealer with a focus on Indian and Southeast Asian Buddhist art. Through both gallery and online sales, it has supplied sculptures to collectors in the United States and Europe since the early 2000s.René van Dijk is a Dutch tax advisor who over four decades has built an impressive collection of Asian art and antiques. He has published several books on his collection, focusing on the typology of different art forms, including Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture, Khmer art, Chinese mingqi, Burmese opium weights, and Amlash animal vessels. In addition, he has written extensively about what he calls “lost forms of money”—that is, objects that essentially functioned as money in past societies but which were not conventional coinage.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, typical casting irregularities, small losses, scattered nicks and scratches, minor surface corrosion, fissures, and possible fills. Old repairs to the feet. The bronze with a smooth, naturally grown patina, with areas of malachite encrustations.Weight: 1,570.8 g (excl. stand), 1,716.4 g (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 28.4 cm (excl. stand), 31.1 cm (incl. stand)Indian art, particularly Gupta and Post-Gupta art from eastern India, was highly influential in the development of Buddhist and Hindu art in Southeast Asia from the sixth century onward. Post-Gupta standing Buddhas can be regarded as the true stylistic predecessors of Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture. The present lot displays remarkable finesse, with a complex and finely detailed robe and facial features. As with Indian bronzes of this period, it is solid cast. The posture resembles the walking Buddha type, with a pronounced sway of the hips. The Post-Gupta style served as one of the principal templates for much of Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture for more than a thousand years.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related, earlier, bronze figure of standing Buddha, Gupta style, dated to the 6th century 33.7 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2003.593.4.
