拍品描述 翻译
A BRONZE HOURGLASS DRUM WITH A DANCING HANUMAN (SKOR SAMPHOR), KHMER, ANGKOR PERIOD, 12TH-13TH CENTURYExpert's note: The present object represents the bronze body of a double-headed hourglass drum of the type known in Cambodia as a skor samphor. Such drums were traditionally fitted with animal skins stretched across both openings and secured by cords running along the body. The two circumferential grooves visible directly beneath the rims served to anchor these cords, which held the drumheads in place and allowed tension to be adjusted to produce the desired sound. Played with the hands, the instrument formed part of the classical musical traditions of mainland Southeast Asia and was associated with temple ceremonies, court music, and theatrical performances. The survival of the bronze body alone, with the organic drumheads and cord bindings now lost, nonetheless preserves the structural features that reveal how the instrument was originally constructed and used.Of waisted hourglass form, the hollow instrument incised on the exterior with concentric lines and raised ribs, balancing to the center in an acrobatic stance is a separately cast diminutive figure of Hanuman. The deity squatting on one leg as he outstretches the other to the front, his arms replicating the motion as he jovially amuses himself. The bejeweled deity is dressed in a short sampot, the tail erect to the back, and the animal head crowned by a conical headdress. (2)Provenance: From an estate sale in San Rafael, California, USA. By repute acquired from a collection in the San Francisco Bay Area.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities. Small losses, scattered nicks and scratches, tiny dings, old repairs around the rim, and signs of weathering, and encrustations. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with malachite encrustationsWeight: 844.5 g (excl. stand), 1.061.9 g (incl. stand)Condition: Length 12.2 cm (excl. stand), 14.2 cm (incl. stand)Hanuman is most prominently featured in the Indian epic Ramayana, which had gained popularity in Cambodia by the 600s. As a divine being, Hanuman has the power to augment or diminish his size at will, and so he grows to such a stature that he can span the ocean with a single stride.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze figure of Hanuman, Angkor period, 15.5 cm high, in the National Museum of Cambodia, inventory number Ga.5472.
