拍品描述 翻译
A DEER ANTLER FIGURE OF A MOTHER AND CHILD, DAYAK PEOPLE, BORNEO, SARAWAKMalaysia, early 20th century. Finely carved from antler of a Sambar deer, the abstracted figure shown crouching on bent legs that support his oblong torso, with hands joined before the abdomen that hold a diminutive offspring rendered with schematic features, identifiable by his furrowed expression. The head of the principal figure, marked by a similarly furrowed brow, a slender nose, and full lips, rises beneath a tall, pointed headdress distinguished by lateral striations that repeat along the sides of the arms.Provenance: From the private collection of Jacques Cortecero, acquired in 1970 on the Baram River, Sarawak, Borneo. The stand inscribed with an old inventory number, 'B.47.'. Jacques Cortecero was a passionate collector, adventurer, and avid traveler whose deep connection to the Indonesian archipelago spanned over two decades. His first journey in the early 1970s marked the beginning of an extensive exploration, returning to the archipelago on numerous occasions until his final expedition in 1995. Throughout these travels, Cortecero journeyed from the swampy forests of Borneo to the central plateau of Java, immersing himself in diverse cultures. He ventured from the headhunter warriors of Nias Island to the Asmat people of the Casuarina Coast, and from the Batak shamans of Lake Toba in northern Sumatra to the Dayak tribes. For Cortecero, his collection was far more than a curated selection of art—it embodied the essence of his life's journey. Each piece represented a profound connection to the cultures, traditions, and stories of the Indonesian people, where art is deeply interwoven into the fabric of social, spiritual, and cultural identity. His collection, reflecting decades of exploration and passion, is a testament to an extraordinary life and a unique narrative in the world of Indonesian art.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, nibbling, and expected age cracks. The antler with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina overall.Weight: 39.4 gDimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 11.3 cm (incl. stand)With a bespoke fitted wood stand. (2)The general name Dayak includes all the peoples native to the inland area of the island of Borneo, who principally settled in the Sarawak and Kalimantan regions. The term underpins a cultural identity that may be attributed to a broad variety of ethnicities including such diverse peoples as the Iban, Kayan, Kenyah, Ngaju, and Ot Danum.Among the most significant artistic expressions of the Dayak peoples are their anthropomorphic sculptures, commonly referred to as 'hampatong'. These works display a remarkable diversity of styles, each corresponding to specific ceremonial or propitiatory purposes. Varying in scale and placement, whether installed before a ceremonial house, at a village crossroads, or along a riverbank, hampatong figures fulfilled important protective, commemorative, and ancestral functions. Through their presence, they served not only as guardians of the community but also as enduring embodiments of lineage and spiritual authority.Literature comparison:Compare a related deer antler handle for a sword carved with the figure of an aso, Dayak people, Indonesia, Borneo, 14 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2013.1137.32.
