拍品描述 翻译
A POLYCHROME CARVED WOOD 'SINGA' ARCHITECTURAL ORNAMENT, TOBA BATAK PEOPLE, 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURYIndonesia, North Sumatra. Of rectangular form, boldly carved in high relief and richly polychromed to depict the face of a mythical singa head with bovine features. The visage characterized by a pair of bulging eyes, a prominent snout, and a broad, pronounced smile, and surmounted by an imposing set of horns that bifurcate and gracefully curve outward in scrolling coils.Provenance: Collection of Peter Schleich, Heidelberg, Germany. A private collection in Germany, acquired from the above.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, age cracks, traces of weathering, signs of former insect activity, small losses to exposed areas, losses to pigments. Overall with a fine, naturally grown patina.Weight: 4,789 gDimensions: Height 61.2 cmThe Batak comprises a linguistic and cultural group encompassing six related societies inhabiting the northern regions of Sumatra, namely the Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Toba, Angkola, and Mandailing. Although each community maintains a distinct cultural identity, they share a number of foundational traditions, including the veneration of a legendary ancestor, Si Raja Batak, from whom all Batak lineages are said to descend. The traditional architecture of the Toba Batak comprises three clearly differentiated building types: the assembly pavilion, locally known as the bale; the communal house accommodating several families, referred to as the ruma; and the rice granary, or sopo, where the harvest was accumulated and preserved, securing sustenance for the community. Despite their distinct functions, all share a common formal and structural typology, characterized by markedly boat-shaped roofs with elaborately carved gables and soaring ridge lines.A row of pillars supports the longitudinal beams known as labe-labe, which run the length of the structure at head height and bear the weight of the imposing roof. These elements were typically adorned with polychrome wood carvings depicting singa heads, such as the present example. The singa, a composite creature evoking both serpent and buffalo features, functioned as a supernatural guardian in the traditional architecture of the Toba Batak. Carved in high relief with sinuous lines and curling motifs, and frequently painted in red, black, and white, it was strategically positioned on prominent structural elements to ensure clear visibility within the architectural ensemble. Through its consistent placement and formal emphasis, the singa became a pervasive protective presence and a defining motif in Toba Batak architectural ornamentation.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Toba Batak polychrome wood architectural ornament, dated late 19th-early 20th century, 61 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2013.1137.1.
