拍品描述 翻译
A STUCCO AND CLAY HEAD OF A BODHISATTVA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 3RD-5TH CENTURYKushan period. Sensitively modeled, the oval face bearing a serene and meditative expression, defined by heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes, an aquiline nose, and full lips tinted in a red hue, framed by the curled mustache, and flanked by pierced and pendulous lobes adorned with loop earrings. The wavy hair arranged in fine strands beneath a delicate headdress tied around the head with a cord terminating in serpent head finials.Provenance: Tony Anninos, California, United States. A private collection in France, acquired from the above. Cornette de Saint Cyr, Paris, 13 May 2022, lot 117, sold for EUR 7,897.50 or approx. EUR 8,500 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). The collection of Farah Massart, Belgium, acquired from the above. Tony Anninos is a well-regarded dealer, expert, and collector of Asian art including Tibetan, Chinese, Khmer, and Gandharan works of art. He has written articles for important publications including Orientations and Arts of Asia. He is the author of 'The Ancient Amulets of Tibet-Thokcha: A Private Collection of 108 Miniature Masterpieces' and co-author of 'Wooden Wonders: Tibetan Furniture in Secular and Religious Life'. Farah Massart is a gallerist and expert in Asian art whose passion began more than thirty years ago while traveling extensively across Asia. After earning a degree in languages and building a career in business management, she reoriented her life toward Southeast Asian and Indian art, founding her gallery Famarte in 2012. Now based in Meise near Brussels with a summer pop-up in Knokke, Famarte specializes in high-quality sculpture, ritual objects, and contemporary Asian art, welcoming collectors in a personal setting. Farah regularly participates in international art fairs and exhibitions, sharing her expertise and dedication with a global community of collectors and enthusiasts.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, obvious losses, cracks and losses to the back, revealing the mostly intact clay core. Old fills and touchups as expected. Remnants of old pigments.Weight: 4,434 g (excl. stand), 4,878 g (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 24.7 cm (excl. stand), 37.7 cm (incl. stand)With an associated wood stand. (2)This head exemplifies the noble qualities befitting a North Indian prince, as demonstrated by his crisp, wavy mustache, protruding jawline, arching brow, and introspective gaze. Because of a lack of additional attributes that might otherwise designate the identity of the sculpture, many of these heads are simply referred to as bodhisattvas. In addition to schist, stucco was a popular medium for sculpture in the ancient Gandhara region. As a lightweight, malleable ware, stucco readily lends itself to delicate detailing and sensitive modeling, conveying a sense of emotional presence exemplified in this large-scale head of a bodhisattva. With idealized proportions and beatific expression, his serene face is the embodiment of compassion.Literature comparison:Compare a related stucco head of a bodhisattva, 20.4 cm high, dated about 3rd/5th century, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1931.269.
