A THANGKA DEPICTING MANJUSHRI, TIBET OR BHUTAN, 18TH-19TH CENTURYGold and distemper on cloth. Mounted in an unusually fine silk and gold thread brocade hanging. The Bodhisattva of Wisdom with golden-yellow complexion seated in dhyanasana upon a lotus pedestal, his right hand raised, brandishing his flaming sword, and his left held before the chest holding a lotus stem coming to full bloom at the shoulder supporting the book of wisdom, clad in a loose-fitting dhoti that envelops his legs in ample folds and billowing scarves, all richly patterned in gold pigment, the body sumptuously adorned with beaded necklaces. His countenance, serene and contemplative, with exquisitely painted features, framed by finely wrought earrings, flowing ribbons, and an intricate tiara. A luminous green nimbus encircles his head, backed by a multi-colored radiating aureole.Set against a verdant landscape beneath a deep blue sky, the bodhisattva is accompanied in the upper register by Buddha Shakyamuni flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava, and in the lower by Vajrapani and Yellow Jambhala centered by a small altar bearing at the edge of a stream.Inscriptions: The reverse stamped with five red seals forming the mantra 'Om Ah Hum Sawa Hum'.Provenance: From the Estate of Edith and Joel Frankel, New York, United States. E & J Frankel was a major New York gallery specializing in Asian Art since 1967. Run by Edith (1939-2012) and Joel Frankel (1937-2018), it was one of the oldest galleries in the United States focusing exclusively on Asian art. Leaders in their field, the Frankels traveled the world in search of Asian art treasures and educated the general public about their shared passion. Their gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City became a local institution, best known for its regular schedule of innovative thematic exhibitions, and frequently visited by the biggest names in the field, such as Eskenazi, Ellsworth, Junkunc, and the Alsdorfs.Condition: Good condition with old wear, minor soiling, creasing, flaking and minor losses to pigments with few associated touchups, little fraying at the edges, possibly minor touchups. The brocade-mounting in fine condition with some loose threads, traces of use, and minor losses and tears.Dimensions: Image size 47.8 x 37.2 cm, Size incl. frame 89.5 x 63.4 cmMounted as a hanging scroll with a silk frame.Manjushri is the embodiment of the Perfection of Wisdom. Consistent with iconographic conventions from this period, the bodhisattva is shown wielding a sword and gracefully grasping the stem of a blue lotus which rises and blooms at his left shoulder to support a manuscript of the Prajnaparamita Sutra. Manjushri resides in the Five Peak Mountain, Wutaishan, and is on earth to save people from ignorance. It is believed that Manjushri was instructed by Shakyamuni to transmit his teachings and his residence, Wutaishan, became one of the major centres of pilgrimage for his followers.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related larger thangka of Manjushri, Bhutan, 19th century, 126 x 89.5 cm, in the World Museum, Liverpool, accession number 53.87.50.
