Of circular form ornamented with two cicadas amid two registers of continuous spiral motifs radiating from a central boss finely incised with concentric rings and four triangles. The rim lined with a band of small studs, and the reverse with a hook for attachment.Expert's note: The small hook on the reverse preserves microscopic traces of the textile to which this buckle was once attached. Comparable ornaments have been recovered from Dian burials, where they were worn at the waist or across the chest and are thought to have served an apotropaic or protective function.Provenance: A private collection in Japan. Paola d'Alatri and Howard Wei, Wei Asian Art, Brussels, Belgium, by 2009. Martin Doustar, Brussels, acquired from the above. A copy of a certificate of authenticity from Wei Asian Arts Oriental Art & Antiques, dated 29 June 2010 and confirming the dating above, accompanies the lot. Howard Wei and Paola d'Alatri are a Brussels-based husband-and-wife team of dealers and collectors whose shared passion for Asian art culminated in the founding of Wei Asian Art in 2001 in Brussels' Sablon district. Long before opening their gallery, the couple spent decades building a collection specializing in antiques from China, Vietnam, and the Himalayan region, focusing particularly on Buddhist sculpture and Chinese scholar's objects. Howard Wei's interest in Chinese art began in childhood, while accompanying his mother to auctions in Brussels, where he developed an early appreciation for antiques and even restored his first Ming bowl before the age of ten. Over the following decades, he continued to collect according to his personal taste and means, while also pursuing extensive museum study across Europe. Martin Doustar is a Brussels-based art dealer and collector whose career spans more than two decades. He began his professional journey in the early 2000s with a focus on Modern Art, developing a keen interest in the ways early twentieth-century artists were influenced by 'primitive' art from Africa and Oceania. Over time, his connoisseurship expanded into archaeological and ethnographic fields, with particular expertise in the ancient arts of the Pacific, Africa, and Pre-Columbian America, while also encompassing Asian material culture and modern masterpieces. He is the author of several catalogues and has organized thematic exhibitions on a wide range of subjects.Artloss Register: Certificate S00025494 from 10 June 2009. (2)Dian was an ancient kingdom situated in modern Yunnan, southwestern China. According to Han historian, Sima Qian, it was established in 279 BC when King Qingxiang of Chu sent a military force to the southwest. Zhuang Qiao, a general of Chu, reached the Dian Lake as part of the Chu military campaign. When the Chu homeland was invaded by the Qin, Zhuang Qiao decided to stay in Yunnan and adopt the native ways, establishing the Dian kingdom. The Qin dynasty was subsequently overthrown by the Han, and the commanderies of the new dynasty, Ba and Shu, bordered Dian. The Shizhaishan culture is distributed in Yunnan Province in southwestern China, particularly around the Dian Lake region near modern-day Kunming. It dates from roughly the 8th century BC to the 1st century BC, and is often associated with the Dian Kingdom. Two bronze ornaments with similar characteristics as the present lot were mentioned in the excavation report from Pirazzoli-t'Serstevens, La civilisation du Royaume de Dian à l'époque Han, d'après le matériel exhumé à Shizhai Shan, 1974, p. 211.Literature comparison:Compare a related bronze buckle ornament inlaid with malachite, Dian kingdom, Yunnan, dated 2nd-1st century BC, 16.2 cm in diameter, in the Miho Museum.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 16 September 2010, lot 895Price: USD 15,000 or approx.
