拍品描述 翻译
A GILT-COPPER ALLOY STUPA OF MANY DOORS, 18TH CENTURYSino-Tibetan. Finely cast, raised on a tiered squared platform incised with 74 doors atop a stepped square base with pairs of lions flanking the Three Jewels on each side of the waist, between neatly incised lotus-petal bands, surmounted by a domed mid-section centered to the front with a niche enclosing a finely painted Buddha image framed behind glass, all below a parasol issuing curling sashes.Provenance: From the collection of Princess Niloufar Pahlavi, acquired together with her other Buddhist figures in the sale as a group collection in Paris circa 1985. The base with two old labels, one inscribed with an inventory number, 'T34'. H.R.H. Princess Niloufar Pahlavi (born 1953) was a member of the Iranian royal family and an active cultural patron and collector, particularly during the later 20th century. As a niece of His Imperial Majesty the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, she moved within international aristocratic and artistic circles, where she developed a refined taste for fine art, decorative arts, and luxury objects. When she moved to Paris with her husband in the 1980s, she assembled an eclectic and sensitive collection housed in a discreet Parisian H?tel Particulier, which was decorated by Jacques Grange in the early 2000s. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear, few tiny nicks, rubbing to gilt, light surface scratches, and minute dents. The base resealed.Weight: 528 g Dimensions: Height 16.3 cmThe Stupa of Many Doors is one of the eight different shapes of chortens in Tibetan Buddhism, known as the Eight Great Stupas, each referring to a major event in the Buddha's life. The Stupa of Many Doors represents the Buddha's first turning of the wheel of Dharma at the deer park in Sarnath near Varanasi. The series of doors on each side of the steps represents the first teachings: the Four Noble Truths, the Six Paramitas, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Twelve Nidanas.Stupas form an important category in Tibetan Buddhist art, as they are memorials to the enlightenment of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. Approaching the end of his life, the Buddha asked that his remains be cremated and spread across the eight kingdoms of his followers in India and Nepal. The form of the stupa was derived from the domed mounds of earth that entombed the relics of the Buddha, and for centuries before the development of iconic images of the Buddha, the circumambulation or worship of the stupa was one of the ways to venerate the Buddha. Over time the stupa assumed many forms across many cultures. This scaled-down model in gilt-bronze, possibly for a personal shrine, serves the same function of housing holy relics, but its higher purpose is to evoke the presence of the Buddha and his teachings.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related gilt-copper stupa, dated to the Qing dynasty, 17.5 cm high, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, reference number 中銅001998N000000000.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 23 March 2012, lot 1794Price: USD 10,625 or approx.
