拍品描述 翻译
A GILT-COPPER ALLOY REPOUSSé PLAQUE OF AMOGHAPASHA, NEPAL, CIRCA 17TH CENTURYFinely worked, the eight-armed deity the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara standing gracefully in tribhanga on a lotus pedestal with a thick beaded rim. His principal right hand is raised in vitarka mudra, while the left holds a water vessel. The remaining six arms radiate around the body and bear attributes including a lotus, rosary, noose, and stylized triple-pronged stem.He is richly adorned, with garments falling in rhythmic pleats between the legs. The serene face is marked by heavy-lidded downcast eyes beneath arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips set in a gentle smile, framed by pendulous earlobes with large loop earrings. The hair is drawn into a high chignon beneath an elaborate lotus-petal tiara. The figure is framed by a flaming mandorla. The reverse fitted with a metal suspension plate at the top, pierced with two apertures.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, assembled from 1965 onwards, thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities, minor warping and small dents, few nicks and faint surface scratches, light rubbing to gilding. Fine, naturally grown, lustrous patina with small areas of verdigris to the back.Weight: 257.3 gDimensions: Height 18.4 cmAmoghapasha, also referred to as the 'Unfailing Lasso', represents the tantric manifestation of Avalokiteshvara. Widely venerated in Nepal, he is historically regarded as the tutelary deity of the Kathmandu Valley. While the number of arms may vary across representations, the present image depicts the deity in his eight-armed form, symbolically rescuing devotees from the Ashta Mahabhaya, or Eight Great Perils, traditionally understood as fire, floods, lions, elephants, snakes, disease, imprisonment, and banditry.Within the Nepalese religious context, this manifestation of Amoghapasha holds particular significance in relation to the Ashtami Vrata Puja, an eight-day observance culminating on the eighth day of the lunar fortnight. Among the Newar Buddhist lay community, this rite is regarded as one of the most important devotional practices. Participants undertake vows to observe the Eight Buddhist Precepts and receive spiritual instruction directed toward the cultivation of selfless compassion through meditative discipline.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Nepalese gilt-bronze repoussé plaque, dated 19th century, 36 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number 1952,1101.10.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams Paris, 10 June 2021, lot 15 Price: EUR 4,080 or approx.
