拍品描述 翻译
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art at Oxford University (the predecessor of Oxford Authentication) on 11 December 1996, based on sample number 766z9, sets the firing date of both samples taken between 900 and 1500 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.Expert's note: Camel figures represent a particularly prominent motif in Sancai ceramics, especially those of substantial size, typically measuring between eighty and one hundred centimeters in height, used to adorn tombs of distinguished individuals. However, examples of smaller scale like the present lot, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship in the application of their characteristic three-color glaze, are significantly rarer and seldom encountered today on the art market.China, 618-907. Naturalistically modeled standing foursquare on a rectangular base with its head held high and its mouth open. An oval blanket with a pleated border is draped over its humps. The saddlecloth and the throat are covered in a cream glaze, and the body and legs in an amber glaze, all highlighted with splashes of green, amber and cream glazes.Provenance: Lempertz, Cologne, 27-28 November 1998, lot 413, estimate DEM 8,000 or approx. EUR 6,800 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). A private collection in Germany, acquired from the above and thence by descent.Condition: Good condition with old wear and firing irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, old repairs and touchups as generally expected from authentic Tang dynasty excavations, scattered small losses to glaze, few minute nicks, light warping, two small holes from sample-taking, now filled.Weight: 2,003 gDimensions: Height 37.5 cmThis fine example of Tang dynasty pottery would have been made for the tombs of the Tang elite. Such figures, which would have been very expensive to purchase, provided an obvious indication of the wealth of a family who could afford to inter such costly goods with their deceased relatives. Not surprisingly, camels have been found among the burial items in several Tang Imperial tombs, as well as some of those belonging to other members of the Tang nobility. The two-humped Bactrian camel was known in China as early as the Han dynasty, having been brought from Central Asia and Eastern Turkestan as tribute. The camel was used by the court and the merchants to transport Chinese goods across the difficult terrain of the Silk Route to the eager markets of Central Asia, Samarkand, Persia and Syria. They carried, on their return journeys, many of the exotic luxuries from the west that were desired by the sophisticated Tang court.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related sancai figure of a Bactrian camel, dated to the Tang dynasty, 38 cm high, in the Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin, Madison, accession number 1986.209.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 15 May 2018, lot 34Price: GBP 11,875 or approx. EUR 18,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A sancai-glazed pottery camel, Tang dynastyExpert remark: Compare the closely related modeling, glazes, and subject with similar pose and saddlecloth. Note the larger size (57 cm).Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Zacke Vienna, 17 October 2025, lot 499Price: EUR 9,750 or approx. EUR 10,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: An amber- and straw-glazed pottery figure of a Bactrian camel, Tang dynastyExpert remark: Compare the closely related modeling and subject as well as the related amber and straw glazes, albeit lacking the emerald green glaze found on the present lot. Note the closely related size (38.5 cm).
