A VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF SEATED MAITREYA NORTHERN ZHOU-SUI DYNASTY (AD 557-618) The bodhisattva is shown seated with legs pendent in bhadrasana (the benevolence pose) on a waisted, hourglassshaped stool. The right hand is raised in abhayamudra and the left hand is held in varadamudra. He is wearing a dhoti folded over at the waist that falls in U-shaped folds to the hem above the bare feet that rest on lotus blossoms, and a shawl with long ends that are gathered by a foliate ornament below the waist and then continue over the arms where they fall to the edge of the base. The face is cast with strong features and is framed by ribbons that trail from the crown to the shoulders. A pierced tab projects from the back of the head. 6? in. (17 cm.) high, zitan box, wood stand
