Qing dynasty, Daoguang mark and of the period Each decorated to the exterior with bamboo sprays in white on a coral-red ground, underglaze blue seal marks to base, 18.7cm diameter, fitted box (2). Cf. ?For a related bowl in the Qingdao Museum, inventory number: level3_and_above_360. 參閲:一件相似的道光時期的碗請見青島博物館,藏品編號:level3_and_above_360。 Note: This type of bowl first appeared during the Yongzheng reign and subsequently developed into a classic category of Qing imperial kiln production, remaining popular throughout the Qing dynasty. The decorative technique employed on these bowls has a specific designation known as gaixue hong (“snow-covered red”). In late Qing treatise Taoya, Chen Liu explained: “Red glaze is applied in such a way that certain areas remain reserved, appearing as if blank; the effect resembles intaglio floral patterns, hence the term ‘snow cover’.” In Qing palace archives, bowls of this type, decorated with coral-red grounds and white bamboo designs, are recorded as “red-ground white bamboo tea bowls,” indicating their association with tea service. An archive dated to the 21st day of the 12th month of the 6th year of the Daoguang reign, preserved in the Qinggong ciqi dang (Imperial Porcelain Records), states: the Imperial Household Department’s Ceramics Repository reported that, according to correspondence from the superintendent of the Jiujiang Customs in the 5th year of Daoguang, the river routes were obstructed that year and large amounts of porcelain could not be transported. It further records: “By the seventh month of this year, when various items including rounded wares were delivered, the warehouse checked against the inventory list and found discrepancies in the received quantities. Missing were two ‘Eight Treasures’ covered jars, two blue-and-white brush washers, ten yellow-lined white interior soup bowls, and ten famille rose red-ground white bamboo tea bowls… the warehouse had no surplus stock… We respectfully request approval to instruct the Jiujiang Customs superintendent to verify whether errors were made in the fifth-year records or whether misplacement occurred during packing, in order to complete the accounting. The consignment should also be urgently dispatched, and the superintendent instructed to deliver goods annually without delay, as these are items of practical necessity and must not be further postponed.”? This record demonstrates the high level of importance attached by the Qing court to the “red-ground white bamboo tea bowls.” Upon discovering that they had not been delivered to the capital by the Jiujiang Customs, an imperial order was issued for their immediate retrieval, explicitly describing them as “items of practical use” that “must on no account be delayed.” Such insistence reflects, in part, the influence of the Daoguang Emperor’s predecessors and his own particular appreciation of tea culture. The Daoguang Emperor was known for his austerity and avoidance of extravagance; consequently, imperial porcelain of his reign marked a departure from the ornate opulence of the Qianlong period, returning instead to the restrained elegance characteristic of Yongzheng imperial wares.
