ESTIMATE: $3,000 – $5,000This striking vertical scroll painting is a vibrant example of the mogu (boneless) and xieyi (freehand) styles often attributed to the late Qing master Wu Changshuo. The composition centers on a flourishing, fruit-laden loquat branch. Clusters of bright, golden-orange loquats are rendered with expressive, wet brushwork, capturing their lusciousness. They are juxtaposed against dense, vigorously painted dark-green leaves, which create a strong textural contrast. The branches themselves are formed from heavy, calligraphy-like ink strokes, displaying a dramatic, raw energy typical of the Shanghai School. The background shows a subtle, wet-wash rock formation, grounding the composition. On the left side of the painting, an upper-section inscription reads: '盧橘夏熟 / 壬戌六月 吳昌碩 / 時年七十九'. This translates to 'The loquats are ripe in summer / [In] the Renxu year [1922], sixth month, Wu Changshuo / at the age of seventy-nine'. Below the inscription are two prominent red artist's seals, which are critical for attribution. The work is presented on light cream-colored paper and mounted as a hanging scroll with its original silk and wood rollers.Dimensions Scroll: 178 cm x 60 cm Panel: 55 cm x 50.5 cm x 3 cmCONDITION REPORTThe painting is in overall fair condition. The paper ground retains its warm cream color. There are natural vertical and horizontal crease marks from being rolled and stored, visible on both the main painting and the upper mounting silk. Minor foxing and scattered tiny light-brown spots are present across the surface, especially within the unpainted background areas. The vibrant orange and green pigments remain stable and unfaded. The original silk mounting shows some wear at the edges and slight fading but remains intact, and the wooden roller ends are present. The artwork has not been lined recently.
