A RARE ROOTWOOD LITERATI VIEWING OBJECT

Japan, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Formed from a naturally shaped piece of dark rootwood and left essentially uncarved, this exceptional object embodies the aesthetic principles of literati contemplation, presenting an abstract, organic form shaped primarily by nature. The dynamic structure rises in an asymmetrical, tapering silhouette, with bifurcating upper sections suggestive of craggy peaks or wind-worn formations.

The surface displays a rich variety of textures, with deeply weathered ridges, hollows, and flowing grain, creating a powerful sense of movement. The undulating contours invite prolonged viewing and interpretation, revealing shifting associations: from mountainous landscapes to more figurative impressions, such as the graceful curvature of a reclining figure or the fleeting suggestion of an animal in motion. This interplay between natural form and imaginative perception lies at the heart of its aesthetic appeal.

HEIGHT 64 cm

Provenance: Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London. From a private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above in 1983 or earlier. With a price label by Sydney L. Moss Ltd, stating a price GBP 1,500 (or approx. EUR 6,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and natural imperfections including age cracks.

Mounted on a modern marble stand.

Scholar’s objects, known in Chinese as gongshi, are naturally formed stones that have been admired for centuries as objects of aesthetic contemplation and intellectual inspiration. First appreciated in China as early as the Tang dynasty and firmly established by the Song dynasty, these objects were prized by literati and scholars, who displayed them in studios and gardens as miniature landscapes or embodiments of natural forces. Stones were valued for qualities such as irregular form, surface texture, and their capacity to evoke mountains or cosmic landscapes, providing focal points for meditation, poetry, and philosophical reflection.

While this tradition is overwhelmingly associated with stone, there exists a far rarer parallel practice of selecting naturally formed rootwood that evokes similar qualities. In such cases, the role of the artisan is deliberately restrained, limited to selection, stabilization, and presentation rather than active carving. The present piece belongs to this highly unusual category, where nature itself acts as the primary creator.

In Japan, the related practice of suiseki similarly values naturally formed objects for their suggestive beauty, though it is almost exclusively limited to stone. Rootwood examples of this kind are exceedingly rare and remain outside the formal canon, making the present object particularly remarkable.

This piece stands at the intersection of natural specimen and cultivated art object, reflecting literati ideals of spontaneity, abstraction, and the poetic interpretation of nature. Its power lies in the preservation of its natural form, inviting continuous reinterpretation and contemplation.
