拍品描述 翻译
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CEREMONIAL HANNYA MASK

Japan, 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Expressively carved to depict the vengeful demon, Hannya, with her mouth wide open, baring her sharply detailed teeth, fangs, and tongue. The grotesque face is marked by hollowed pupils on bulging eyes, backed by gold leaf, giving them a piercing, intense gaze. The mask is framed by pendulous earlobes and a broad, prominent nose, with protruding cheeks and an elongated, squared chin. The top of the head is surmounted by curved horns and hair that is neatly parted at the center. The reverse of the mask features a central bar pierced with two apertures for suspension, signed with a two-character signature within a square reserve beneath.

HEIGHT 49 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and typical traces of use.

Typically, Hannya masks are used in Noh performances, particularly in plays that involve jealousy and revenge, where a woman, overcome by these emotions, transforms into a demon. The features of the mask — sharp teeth, fangs, hollowed eyes, and curved horns — are meant to evoke an eerie sense of power and danger.

A large ceremonial Hannya mask like this would likely have been used for ritual or ceremonial purposes, perhaps in festivals or performances tied to the Buddhist or Shinto traditions, where it would serve to symbolize the wrath of vengeful spirits. Given its size and level of detail, this particular mask may have been intended for prominent public display or ceremonial use in larger processions or performances. The mask’s significance would have been not just for theatrical performance but also to evoke spiritual protection or to ward off evil forces associated with the Hannya demon. Masks of this scale and craftsmanship were often produced for special occasions or grand performances, particularly during ceremonial festivals or in ritualistic settings.
