GOTO JOTARO: AN EXCEPTIONAL LACQUER ‘FALLING CHRYSANTHEMUMS’ NATSUME (TEA CADDY)

By Goto Jotaro (b. 1942), unsigned
Japan, late 20th century, Showa period (1926-1989)

Of typical fubuki form with chamfered upper and lower edges and a flush-fitting cover, bearing a lustrous roiro ground and exquisitely decorated in gold and cream-white takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The design depicts a dense profusion of chrysanthemum blossoms, some enriched with radiant nashiji, covering the lid and cascading gently down the sides. The flowers drift across a field of windblown autumn reeds rendered in luminous gold kinji, creating a seamless and continuous composition. The interior and base are finished in silver lacquer, with rims in gold fundame.

HEIGHT 7.3 cm, DIAMETER 7.4 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

With the original wood storage box (tomobako), inscribed by the artist: Akino makie, fubuki natsume, Jotaro 秋野蒔絵、雪吹棗、穣太郎 [maki-e lacquer tea caddy, with the autumnal field design, in the fubuki (snowstorm) shape, made by Jotaro] with seal Jotaro 穣太郎

Goto Jotaro (b. 1942, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan) is a preeminent practitioner of traditional Japanese lacquerware. As the eldest son of Goto Taizo, known as Daisan, and grandson of first-generation Goto Tomonori, he continues a distinguished, multi-generational lineage of lacquer craftsmanship. Over decades, his work has demonstrated exceptional proficiency in urushi and maki-e, receiving consistent recognition in regional and specialized exhibitions, including the Ishikawa Prefecture Traditional Crafts Lacquerware Exhibition. He holds formal certification as a Traditional Craftsman from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

The present natsume exemplifies the fubuki (“snowstorm”) form, characterized by chamfered edges and a continuous decorative scheme that dissolves the distinction between lid and body. This type is also known as men-nakatsugi, a variant particularly favored by the tea master Kobori Enshu (1579-1647), whose refined aesthetic ideals played a central role in shaping the tea ceremony during the early Edo period. The cascading chrysanthemums - long associated with autumn and longevity - are rendered with remarkable density and vitality, creating a richly textured surface that evokes both seasonal beauty and the fleeting movement of falling blossoms.
