TOSA MITSUSADA: A SUPERB PAIR OF SIX-PANEL ‘BIRDS AND FLOWERS’ BYOBU (FOLDING SCREENS)

By Tosa Mitsusada (1738-1806), signed Edokoro azukari Tosa no kami Mitsusada and sealed Gain jisho
Japan, late 18th-early 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, watercolors, and gold leaf on paper. Each mounted on silk brocade on six black lacquered wood panels with metal fittings.

The first, meticulously painted with a composite scene of seasonal flora, centered on a gnarled willow dusted with snow, alongside a cluster of camellias (tsubaki) similarly laden, evoking the quiet persistence of winter while subtly suggesting the imminent arrival of spring. Snow-capped mountains rise in the background, and a gently flowing stream winds through the composition, inhabited by egrets and a pair of sparrows soaring above.

The second, finely rendered with a variety of birds delicately arranged around a lush evergreen pine, set amid blooming hibiscus (haibisukasu), white peonies (shakuyaku), and irises (shobu), celebrating the advent of spring and the approach of summer. Windblown reeds line the edge of a serene pond, above which a pair of swallows (tsubame) flutters gracefully, all interspersed by sweeping clouds.

The reverses of both screens are decorated with young pines beneath clouds dusted in gold and silver.

Inscriptions: Each signed to the bottom right Edokoro azukari Tosa no kami Mitsusada 画所預土佐光貞 [Tosa Mitsusada in charge of Painting Atelier to the Court] and sealed Gain jisho 画院持詔 [Head of Painting Bureau].

SIZE 84 x 217 cm (each)

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and vibrant colors. Little soiling, minor flaking, and small losses to gold leaf. The back with expected traces of wear and use and minuscule tears.

Tosa Mitsusada (1738-1806), also known as Fujiwara no Mitsusada, was the second son of Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1700-1772) and a leading figure of the Tosa school. Appointed Edokoro azukari (official painter to the Imperial Court) in 1754, he played a central role in maintaining and transmitting the classical Yamato-e tradition. In 1789, during the renovation of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, he was commissioned to produce sliding door (fusuma) paintings, and he continued to receive court patronage throughout his career, attaining high court rank before being succeeded by his son, Tosa Mitsufu, in 1806.
