Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, gouache, gofun (calcified crushed shell), and gold leaf on wood panels. Mounted within reddish-brown lacquered frames. The panels are decorated with white poppies on a luminous gold ground, rendered with characteristic Rinpa elegance and bold simplicity.

SIZE (each) 171.8 x 122.5 cm

Provenance: Formerly in the collection of William Gladstone (1809-1898), Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, displayed at 10 Downing Street and later at his residence in Wales. Thence to Lord Justice Sir Harry Trelawney Eve (1856-1940), and by descent in his family. With Angel Antiques, London, 1963, copies of the invoice and a signed statement, dated 7 and 25 May 1963 respectively, confirming the above provenance accompany the lot. Subsequently in the collection of Harry J. Haon II (1901-1989), and by descent. Sold at Freeman’s, Asian Arts, Philadelphia, 18 April 2023, lot 286. Thereafter in the private collection of Edwin “Ed” Hardy, San Francisco, California, acquired from the above.
William Gladstone (1809-1898) was a prominent British statesman and Prime Minister, serving four non-consecutive terms between 1868 and 1894. A leading figure of the Liberal Party, he was known for his commitment to political reform, free trade, and Irish Home Rule, and played a central role in expanding suffrage and advancing national education.
Lord Justice Sir Harry Trelawney Eve (1856-1940) was an English barrister, judge, and Liberal politician. Educated at Exeter College, Oxford, he was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1881, took silk in 1895, and was appointed to the Chancery Division in 1907, where he served until his retirement in 1937. He was knighted in 1907 and later sworn into the Privy Council.
Harry J. Haon II (1901-1989), a chemist with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, lived in London from the mid-1950s and assembled a notable collection of Asian art during this period, continuing to reside there part-time into the late 1970s.
Edwin “Ed” Hardy is a retired San Francisco art dealer known for his expertise in Asian decorative art. He founded Ed Hardy San Francisco in 1976, building an eclectic collection that bridged Eastern and Western traditions. Although much of his collection was sold at Bonhams in 2009, the present lot remained in his private collection until recently.
Condition: The fusuma panels likely re-mounted for presentation a long time ago. Overall good condition with old wear, expected age cracks with associated losses, minor warping, rubbing to gilt, flaking and losses to the gofun, and touchups and restorations to some of the petals and foliage. The frame with signs of wear, loose joints, and rubbing to lacquer. Presenting very well.
