YOSHIOKA INABANOSUKE: A SUPERB IRON ‘DAIKOKU AND COIN-GATHERING RATS’ TSUBA

Inscribed Yoshioka Inabanosuke
Japan, c. 1850, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of kawarigata form, the thick and weighty iron plate is boldly carved in marubori to depict Daikoku opening his treasure bag for two rats, which dutifully fill it with gathered coins. The composition is enriched with gold takazogan and finely executed kebori details. The reverse shows two further rats carrying gold coins beside Daikoku’s wish-granting mallet. His robe is ornamented with karakusa scrolls and swirling cloud motifs. Inscribed Yoshioka Ibanosuke.

HEIGHT 8.7 cm, LENGTH 7.7 cm, 2.3 cm (the nakago), WIDTH 1.6 cm (the thickest section of the mimi), 0.6 cm (the seppa-dai)
WEIGHT 376.6 g

Provenance: From an old Swiss private collection. The nakago ana with remnants of an old label.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear.

Daikoku, or Daikokuten, derives from the Buddhist deity Mahakala and is widely revered in Japan as a bringer of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. He is one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune and is commonly depicted with his treasure bag and mallet, accompanied by rats, which symbolize abundance. In Edo-period representations such as the present example, he appears as a benevolent and approachable figure, reflecting his popular role as a guardian of prosperity and commerce.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related iron tsuba of Daikoku, dated 1853, 7.6 cm, at Christie’s, Samurai Swords and Armour: A Refined Art, 4 December 2014, New York, lot 24 (sold for USD 4,375 or approx. EUR 5,300 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
