MIYAO: A RARE PARCEL-GILT BRONZE OKIMONO OF A SAMURAI WARRIOR

By the Miyao company of Yokohama, signed Miyao sei
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely cast, the figure standing firmly atop a wood pedestal, crafted as a traditional low table and adorned with intricate, gold-lacquered karakusa motifs, with his left hand raised to shield his eyes from the sun and gaze into the distance, while his right hand clasps a bundle of sticks. The warrior is richly clad in martial attire, lavishly decorated with gold floral motifs and accretions, further incised with delicate foliate designs. His face, with a resolute expression, framed by a luxuriant, windblown beard and hair meticulously arranged in two braids that fall over his shoulders. Signed to the back within a gilt rectangular reserve MIYAO sei [made by Miyao].

HEIGHT 20.3 cm
WIDTH of stand 10.8 cm
WEIGHT 672 g

Provenance: From the private collection of Lucille Coleman, New York, United States, thence by descent. Lucille Coleman (1931–2024) maintained a gracious and enduring presence in New York philanthropic and cultural circles for several decades. Renowned for exceptional taste and quiet generosity, she brought elegance and thoughtfulness to every pursuit, from careful collecting to steadfast support of charitable institutions, including a long-standing relationship with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, which recognized her contributions by naming a residential tower on Manhattan Upper East Side in her honor. Her collection encompassed a refined and wide-ranging selection of fine art, furniture, decorative objects, and Asian works of art, reflecting a life devoted to beauty, legacy, and meaningful engagement with the world around her. Highlights include numerous Japanese works, among them an extensive group of Miyao bronzes, acquired from Flying Crane Antiques in New York and from various auction houses worldwide.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting-inherent irregularities. The wood stand with expected natural age cracks.

The Ainu, indigenous to Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, and parts of Sakhalin, are a people with a history spanning millennia, existing before Japanese expansion into the north. They established a language, ritual life, and material culture distinct from those of mainland Japan, reflecting their own complex social structures and traditions. Unlike the agrarian, hierarchical society of the Japanese heartland, with a codified samurai class, fortified settlements, and rigid social stratification, the Ainu organized into small, autonomous communities without centralized political authority or a formal warrior class.

Founded by Miyao Eisuke, the Miyao Company of Yokohama specialized in the manufacture of bronze sculptures, embellished with gold and silver as well as patinated copper alloys, that represent generic samurai warriors as well as more precisely identifiable characters from Japanese myth and legend. In addition, the company also made a smaller number of pieces in other formats such as incense-burners, vases, and chargers.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related patinated parcel-gilt bronze figure of a samurai warrior looking into the distance, signed Miyao, 20 cm high, at Bonhams, Asian Art, European Ceramics, and Glass, Edinburgh, 7 December 2006, lot 1137 (sold for GBP 2,820 or approx. EUR 5,600 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
