拍品描述 翻译
KINKOZAN: A FINE SATSUMA CERAMIC ‘SAMURAI AND ATTENDANTS IN THE MIST’ DISH

By the Kinkozan company, signed and sealed Kinkozan zo
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of circular form, with shallow, gently rounded sides supported on a short, straight foot. The interior is exquisitely decorated in polychrome enamels with extensive gilt accents, centered by a circular medallion depicting a samurai accompanied by three attendants, resting amidst undergrowth beside the waters of a marsh. The tranquil scene unfolds beneath a mist-laden sky, from which a full moon softly emerges, lending the composition a poetic, atmospheric quality. The central reserve is framed around the cavetto by an encircling band of gilt flowering sprigs set against a deep gozu-blue ground, intersected by a river-shaped panel rendered in turquoise-blue enamel with finely detailed gilt spuming waves. Emerging from these are a variety of famous family crests including the Imperial Tokugawa mon.

The exterior is similarly adorned with delicate gilt foliate sprays on a gozu-blue ground. The base, covered with a clear glaze revealing the cream-toned ceramic body beneath, is decorated with a winged dragon enclosing the gilt signature KINKOZAN zo [made by Kinkozan] next to the impressed seal KINKOZAN zo.

DIAMETER 22.1 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with no visible damages or signs of restoration (checked under UV light). Typical wear and minuscule rubbing to gilding.

The Kinkozan company was among the most successful producers of so-called Kyo-Satsuma (Kyoto Satsuma) wares. Like their counterparts in Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo, Kinkozan’s production reflects Kyoto’s response to strong Western demand for finely painted Japanese ceramics during the Meiji period. Following the international exposure of Japanese art at the Paris Exposition of 1867, the rise of Japonisme in Europe led to a significant increase in exports, with Kinkozan wares admired for their delicate brushwork, refined compositions, and harmonious use of color and gold.

Auction comparison:

EUR 5,700 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
