A LARGE AND FINE YABU MEIZAN STUDIO

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of elegant oval form, with a flat base and tall, slightly tapering sides rising to an everted rim. The interior is richly decorated in vivid polychrome enamels and extensive gilding, depicting a lively swarm of insects, including grasshoppers, beetles, fireflies, and praying mantises, together with a small snail and fluttering butterflies, all rendered with remarkable naturalistic detail.

The central composition is framed by a band of shippo-tsunagi pattern at the border, while the cavetto is densely filled with a millefleur ground of chrysanthemums, peonies, and hydrangeas, creating a richly layered decorative field. The exterior is ornamented with a band of stylized flowerheads interspersed with paulownia-shaped imperial crests, together with a four-character mark in gold script, now worn and largely illegible; however, the invoice from Barry Davies records the signature as Tozan seisei. It is therefore plausible that the present dish was made by Ito Tozan for the Yabu Meizan workshop (see lot 149 in the present sale for another example of this collaboration). The base is left unglazed, revealing the buff-colored ceramic body beneath.

LENGTH 31.5 cm

Provenance: Barry Davies Oriental Art, London, United Kingdom, 1999. From an English private collection of Satsuma ceramics, Wiltshire, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. A copy of the signed original invoice, dated 10 June 1999, stating a purchase price of GBP 3,800 (or approx. EUR 8,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Barry Davies Oriental Art was a London-based gallery specializing in Asian art, with particular expertise in Japanese works of the Edo and Meiji periods, and has contributed significantly to the study and appreciation of netsuke, lacquer, Meiji ceramics and metalwork.
Condition: Excellent condition with no visible damages or signs of restoration (checked under UV light). Typical wear and minuscule rubbing to gilding.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related Satsuma ware circular dish, decorated with dignitaries encircled by fluttering butterflies and flower arrangements, by Yabu Meizan, Meiji period, late 19th century, 21.7 cm diameter, at Christie’s, Japanese Ceramics and Works of Art, London, 28 June 2001, lot 193 (sold for GBP 3,525 or approx. EUR 7,600 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
