ITO TOZAN I & YABU MEIZAN: A FINE SATSUMA CERAMIC ‘TRAILING WISTERIA’ BOTTLE VASE

By Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) and Yabu Meizan (1853–1934), signed Yabu Meizan and Tozan
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Carefully potted, the elegant baluster-shaped body gently tapers toward the base and rises to a short, waisted neck, finished with a flared rim and narrow circular mouth. The exterior is finely decorated in gilt and vivid enamels, depicting luxuriant trailing wisteria (fuji) vines rendered with remarkable delicacy and fluidity. The surface is enriched with a dense ground of minute gilt dots of varying concentration, all beneath a finely crackled transparent glaze that lends depth and subtle luminosity to the composition. The underside is signed in gilt within a square reserve YABU MEIZAN, alongside an impressed seal mark reading TOZAN, indicating the involvement of both artists.

HEIGHT 16.8 cm

Condition: Subtle signs of restoration (visible under UV light) and repainting around the mouth. Otherwise, excellent condition with minor surface wear and firing-inherent irregularities, and some expected light rubbing to gilding.

Ito Tozan I (1846-1920), born Jutaro in Kyoto’s Awata district, initially trained as a painter within the Maruyama–Shijo school, later turning to ceramics under masters such as Kameya Kyokutei and Takahashi Dohachi III. He established his own kiln in 1867 and became a leading figure in Kyoto ceramics, contributing to the refinement of Awata ware. His achievements were widely recognized, including awards at international expositions in Amsterdam, Paris, and Chicago, as well as honors from the Imperial Household, notably the Medal with Green Ribbon (1899), the honorary title To-o in 1912, and election to the Imperial Art Academy in 1917.

Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) was among the most celebrated Satsuma decorators of the Meiji period, renowned for his exceptionally fine brushwork and intricate compositions. His workshop produced high-quality wares for both domestic and international markets and played an important role in the global success of Japanese ceramics during the height of export production.

Documented collaborations between the two artists are extremely rare, if not entirely unrecorded in standard literature and auction archives. The presence of both signatures on the present vase is therefore highly unusual and suggests a special commission or workshop-level collaboration, combining Tozan’s ceramic body with Meizan’s decorative expertise. As such, this piece represents a remarkable and possibly unique intersection of two leading artistic traditions within Meiji ceramics.
