OKAMOTO RYOZAN FOR THE YASUDA COMPANY: A FINE SATSUMA CERAMIC SQUARE BOTTLE VASE

By Okamoto Ryozan (c. 1820-1910), signed Ryozan with the mark of the Yasuda Company
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely potted and of elegant square section, the body rising from a gently spreading foot to sharply angled shoulders and a short, waisted neck with an everted mouth and slightly flared, thickened rim. The exterior is exquisitely decorated in vivid polychrome enamels with extensive gilding. Two large rectangular panels on alternating sides present contrasting scenes: one depicting a lively procession of families crossing a wooden bridge toward a thatched temple set within a tranquil landscape, the other showing two sparrows perched among blossoming cherry branches beside a winding stream, rendered with delicate naturalism. These principal reserves are framed by elaborate gilt borders and set against a rich gozu-blue ground, the adjoining sides further enlivened with gilded scrolling foliage and smaller cartouches containing additional figural and floral motifs.

The shoulders are embellished with hollyhock crests (Mitsuba Aoi mon), Imperial symbols of Japan, interspersed with flowering sprays, while the neck is encircled by further ornamental floral bands. The underside is signed in gold RYOZAN, with the mark of the Yasuda Company, and bears the seal of the Shimazu family.

HEIGHT 31.3 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with no visible damages or signs of restoration (checked under UV light). Typical, minor rubbing and losses to gilding, mostly along the edges and corners.

Okamoto Ryozan (c. 1820-1910), born Nakamura Tatsunosuke, is widely regarded as one of the foremost Satsuma artists of the golden age of Meiji export ceramics. He trained under the distinguished 10th-generation potter Nishimura Zengoro, who bore the artistic name Ryozan. Following his master’s death in 1851, Tatsunosuke adopted the name Okamoto Ryozan in tribute. He later became Head Artist at the Yasuda Company in Kyoto, where he established himself as a leading figure in Satsuma production. His work is characterized by a refined painterly quality, intricate detail, and a harmonious use of color, making it highly sought after.

The Yasuda Company, founded in 1896 by Yasuda Genshichi and Yasuda Kizaburo, was one of the most respected Kyoto workshops of the late Meiji period. Renowned for its high standards and careful selection of collaborators, the firm worked with leading artists such as Ryozan, Sozan, Kizan, Hozan, and Seikozan, producing finely decorated export wares that exemplify the height of Meiji craftsmanship.
