A PAIR OF LARGE (74 CM) EXCEPTIONAL POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURES OF CELESTIAL ATTENDANTS, NANBOKUCHO TO MUROMACHI PERIOD

Japan, 14th-16th century, Nanbokucho (1336-1392) to Muromachi period (1336-1573)

Each finely carved in wood and elaborately decorated in polychrome, the figures depict a pair of celestial figures standing in mirror image. Both are dressed in voluminous, layered robes of distinctly Chinese courtly type, with wide sleeves cascading in rhythmic folds and gathered across the body in bold, angular drapery. The structured treatment of the garments imparts an almost armor-like presence, suggesting rank and authority. One hand is raised in a gesture of address or command, enhancing the sense of animation and interaction. Their bearded faces are sensitively modeled, one with more gaunt features, the expressions individualized, and both with crystal-inlaid eyes. Their heads are surmounted by tall, mitre-like crowns, reinforcing their elevated and formal character.

HEIGHT 74 cm and 74.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, minor age cracks, flaking and losses to pigments, few minor losses, scattered chips.

These striking figures reflect the enduring dialog between Japanese medieval sculpture and continental models. The voluminous robes, with their broad sleeves and layered construction, are derived from Chinese court dress, long associated with status and authority and widely adopted in East Asian Buddhist imagery to denote celestial or attendant figures.

During the Nanbokucho and Muromachi periods, Japan maintained active cultural exchange with Yuan and Ming China, particularly through Zen temple networks that facilitated the transmission of paintings, objects, and visual ideas. Within this context, continental figural types were adapted and reinterpreted by Japanese sculptors. The present figures exemplify this process: while their costume preserves the formal language of Chinese court attire, their carving is markedly more animated, with exaggerated movement in the sleeves and a heightened sense of gesture, as well as typical crystal-inlaid eyes.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related wood polychrome wood figure of the Utteno (King of Khotan), Important Cultural Property, dated 1273, the figure dressed in similar robes and with a similar crown, in the Tokyo National Museum, collection reference no. C-1854-2. Compare a related polychrome wood group of three seated luohans, illustrating the connection between Japan and China discussed in the lot essay above, dated Ming dynasty (1368-1644), 56.5 cm high, in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object number 1995.417.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related polychrome wood figure of Anila, dated Nanbokucho-Muromachi period, 14th-15th century, 51.1 cm high, at Christie’s, 22 April 2015, New York, lot 11 (sold for USD 35,000 or approx. EUR 42,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
