拍品描述 翻译
Description Of oval shape, with large curls coiling like snails covering the large ushnisha but leaving the facetted second ushnisha exposed; with a meditative expression, with large slit-like eyes with lowered lids, and a mouth with curved full lips. A strand of curly hair extends down to the long ears. Traces of pigment. Crack to the nose. Mounted on a black marble stand. The wealthy department store owner Hermann Ploschitzki (1872–1932) and his wife Johanna, née Zander (1887–1981), are regarded as major art collectors. The couple spent their last years in a stately villa in Berlin-Dahlem at Messelstra?e 5–11, built between 1928 and 1930 by the renowned architects Breslauer & Salinger. The home was documented in 1930 by the photographer Martha Huth (1891–1984). A further collection of photographs of the house is in the estate of Johanna Ploschitzki (Hansi Share), held at the USC Libraries, University of Southern California. In addition to Breslauer, Paul Huldschinski is said to have been responsible for the interior decoration. The rooms were furnished in the Neo-Baroque style, occasionally with a Chinese touch, as can be seen, for example, in the design of the library door panels. Chinese ancestor portraits hung on the walls of the library, and Tang dynasty funerary and other small sculptures were arranged on Chinese tables. The present head can be found in one of the photographs housed by the USC Libraries. According to notes by Johanna Ploschitzki, drawn up in connection with the restitution proceedings in 1949, this head was acquired in Paris from the well-known dealer Léon Wannieck (1875–1931) on Rue Saint-Georges, whose business was continued by his widow Marie Madeleine (1891–1960). The Ploschitzkis purchased a great deal from Wannieck. Being of Jewish descent, in 1934, Johanna Ploschitzki was forced to vacate her home. From then on, she spent years preparing to emigrate to the USA and, in 1939, commissioned the Schenker removal firm to pack up her belongings. Nine liftvans were transported to Hamburg to be shipped from there to the USA as removal goods. In 1940, however, the Secret State Police began confiscating the liftvans stored in Hamburg, and on 31 October 1941 Ploschitzki’s belongings were declared to be sold by auction. The Hamburg museums had the right of first refusal, and the Museum of Ethnology (now the Museum am Rothenbaum – Art and Cultures of the World [MARKK]) acquired six lots of Chinese art (including one pair) and two books from a total of 1,449 items. The invoice to the museum dated 29 November 1941 shows that the present object, the ‘old head’, was valued at RM 500. In 1951, six Chinese artefacts were returned to Johanna Ploschitzki, who had taken the name Hansi Share in Los Angeles; the ‘old head’ was not found at the MARKK at that time. However, it resurfaced at the museum in 2019 during preparations for an exhibition, was displayed in the 2020 show ‘Steppes & Silk Roads’ and featured in the catalogue. In June 2024, the ‘old head’ was restituted to the heirs. Dimensions Height 30 cm Exhibited Steppes & Silk Roads, MARKK (Museum am Rothenbaum.
