A BAMBARA FEMALE FIGURE Mali Wood This elegant ancestral female figure stands in a rigid, formalized posture, showcasing the severe geometric minimalism characteristic of classic Bambara carving. The head is defined by an exceptionally high, crested sagittal coiffure that sweeps backward, balancing a face with a long, columnar nose and a pointed jawline. The slender torso extends down to pronounced, conical breasts that project forward, with the arms carved close to the body, ending in hands resting flat against the thighs. The wood displays a deeply aged, dark matte patina with areas of encrustation from ritual applications. H. 33 cm Note The Bambara (or Bamana) people of Mali occupy a central place in West African art history, celebrated for their highly structured, abstract sculpture. Large-scale female figures like this example were traditionally created for the Gwan or Jo societies—egalitarian initiation associations that governed social and spiritual life. Known as Jomoon (Jo pictures) or associated with the ideal mother figure Gwandusu, these sculptures embody themes of fertility, extraordinary strength, and spiritual authority. They were brought out during annual ceremonies to ensure the well-being of the community, successful childbirth, and agricultural abundance. The radical abstraction of Bambara figurative forms deeply inspired Western avant-garde artists in the early 20th century. Similar prominent examples are part of world-class collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Musée du Quai Branly (Paris).
