拍品描述 翻译
AN ASMAT ''ANCESTRAL FACE' CEREMONIAL SHIELD Papua, Indonesia / New Guinea Mangrove Wood, Natural Pigments This ceremonial shield, known in the Asmat language as jamasj, is a quintessential piece of woodcarving from the Asmat people of southwestern New Guinea. Carved from a single piece of mangrove wood, the shield features a towering, elongated form with a distinctively sculpted upper finial. The surface is adorned with complex, deeply incised relief carvings, which have been accentuated by the traditional application of natural organic pigments—charcoal (black), lime (white), and ochre (red). The central panel is decorated with red and black anthropomorphic figures and abstract designs, showcasing a series of stylized, interconnected ancestral motifs that are meticulously balanced to evoke both spiritual power and visual harmony. H.176cm Note Among the Asmat, shields are far more than defensive equipment; they are considered potent, living vessels for the spirits of ancestors. Traditionally crafted for head-hunting rituals and major ceremonies, such as the Jamasj Pokmbu (Shield Feast), these objects were believed to embody the presence of deceased male relatives. By carrying a shield into conflict or displaying it during ritual dances, a warrior was not acting alone, but was empowered by the spiritual protection and the vengeful strength of his ancestors. The motifs carved onto the surface—ranging from representations of animals associated with masculinity, like wild boar tusks, to stylized human forms—serve as a symbolic visual language that communicates the shield’s history, the lineage of its owner, and its duty to guide the souls of the dead toward Safan (the land of the ancestors).
