AN IMPORTANT TCHOKWE CHIEF’S CHAIR (CACCIA) Tchokwe People / Angola Wood and pigments This exceptional two-part chief’s chair, or caccia, is a masterpiece of Tchokwe sculptural art, symbolizing authority, prestige, and ancestral wisdom. The chair is expertly carved from dark-toned hardwood, consisting of a detachable, upright backrest and a contoured seat, which interlock to form a stable structure. The backrest is the focal point of the artistry, featuring a central openwork carving of a figure, likely a chief or ancestor, flanked by intricate geometric patterns. At the very top, two exquisite, finely carved figures are depicted in the act of pounding in mortars, a culturally significant domestic scene that often serves as a metaphor for social cohesion and ancestral continuity. Beneath the openwork, a stylized mask face is carved in relief, further enhancing the piece's spiritual presence. The wood displays a rich, deep brown patina, reflecting years of ceremonial use and expert handling. H. 82.5 cm Note Among the Tchokwe people of Angola, such chairs were exclusive regalia belonging to chiefs or dignitaries. They served not only as functional seats for public gatherings and judicial proceedings but also as thrones that embodied the spirit and legacy of the leadership. The intricate carvings on the backrest are not merely decorative; they serve as a visual repository of Tchokwe oral history, social values, and cosmology. The figures depicted engaged in daily activities—such as the act of pounding grain—symbolize the fundamental role of labor, sustenance, and community organization under the chief's guidance. The Tchokwe are world-renowned for their sophisticated carving style, characterized by a refined balance between figurative naturalism and abstract ornamentation. This chair represents the pinnacle of traditional African prestige objects, sought after for both its exceptional sculptural quality and its historical significance as an emblem of political and spiritual power.
