A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF KING GESAR 西藏 晚清 铜鎏金格萨王像 Tibet, late Qing dynasty King Gesar is shown mounted on a winged horse, brandishing a long spear in a heroic pose above a cloud-form base set with a bound figure whose hands and feet are tied, the spear directed toward the bound demon below, symbolizing the vanquishing of disease and ignorance underfoot. H.33cm Note King Gesar (Gesar of Ling) is the central figure of the Tibetan epic tradition, widely regarded as one of the longest epic narratives in the world. A legendary hero of uncertain historicity, he is traditionally believed to have lived between the 10th and 12th centuries, although no definitive historical dates can be established. The epic, which likely took shape from the 12th century onward, has been transmitted orally across Tibet, Mongolia, and Central Asia, evolving into numerous regional versions. According to the narrative, Gesar was a semi-divine warrior sent from the celestial realm to restore order in the human world. Born under miraculous circumstances and raised in obscurity, he rose to power after winning a horse race and becoming king of Ling. His life is defined by a series of heroic campaigns, during which he subdued demons, defeated rival kingdoms, and upheld the Buddhist faith. Revered as both a warrior and protector figure, he embodies the triumph of wisdom and virtue over chaos, ignorance, and evil. In Tibetan Buddhist contexts, Gesar is also venerated as a protective figure, sometimes regarded as an emanation of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), and is celebrated as a national hero across Tibetan and Mongolian cultural regions. The Epic of King Gesar reflects a historical era characterized by fragmentation and regional conflict, gradually giving way—through warfare and cultural exchange—to political and social unification, and may be understood as an artistic re-creation of the transformation of ancient Tibetan society from a state of division to one of unity. His imagery frequently depicts him mounted on a horse, armed with weapons and trampling adversaries beneath him, symbolizing the subjugation of negative forces and the protection of the faithful, placing him at the intersection of epic literature, religious belief, and visual culture in the Himalayan world.
