A PAIR OF IMPERIAL COPPER ENAMEL PAINTED ‘DRAGON AND PHOENIX’ COVERED EWERS Vietnam, Nguy?n dynasty, Minh M?ng mark and period (1820–1840) Finely painted in polychrome enamels on copper (pháp lam). One ewer is decorated on a blue enameled ground with reserves in yellow, each enclosing a dragon and a phoenix; the other presents the inverse scheme, with a brilliant yellow ground and blue reserves similarly enclosing the paired motifs. Both are further enriched with flowers and scrolling foliage in polychrome enamels. The bases bear the four-character mark Minh M?ng niên t?o (“Made during the reign of Minh M?ng”). H. 20 cm and 20.3 cm Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France. Formerly in the possession of Mr.D, who lived in Vietnam in the late 19th to early 20th century, and subsequently preserved within the family. Note The art of enamel on copper (pháp lam) in Vietnam reached its peak under the reign of Emperor Minh M?ng (1820–1841), when the court actively promoted the development of imperial workshops, notably the Pháp Lam Ty T??ng C?c. This technique, derived from Qing dynasty enamel traditions, was introduced and refined with the participation of Chinese craftsmen engaged in the construction of the Imperial City of Hu?. Production was strictly controlled by the court and intended for ritual, architectural, and ceremonial use within the imperial environment. Characteristic features include the use of brilliant yellow grounds—reserved for imperial symbolism—contrasted with vivid blue enamels, as well as finely executed polychrome floral scrolls. The present pair illustrates a particularly refined aesthetic through the use of complementary colour schemes, with one ewer featuring a blue ground with yellow reserves, and the other reversing this arrangement. The decoration of a five-clawed dragon and phoenix (long ph?ng) is emblematic of imperial authority and conjugal harmony, representing respectively the emperor and the empress, and is closely associated with the visual language of the Hu? court during the first half of the 19th century.
Condition:Both ewers show evident enamel wear, losses, and cracking. On the yellow-ground example, the base mark has been partially obscured by a layer of translucent yellow paint, through which only part of the Minh M?ng mark remains visible. The characters “Ng?c C??ng” are inscribed over this yellow-painted surface.
