A SMALL POLYCHROME THANGKA ON CLOTH DEPICTING THE MAHASIDDHA LUIPA Tibet, late 19th-early 20th Century At the center of the composition is the Mahasiddha Luipa, depicted with a prominent beard and his hair tied into a topknot adorned with an ornament. Bare-chested and draped with an orange and yellow meditation band, he wears a decorated red lower garment. He is seated in a relaxed posture upon a spotted leopard skin, holding a large fish with his left hand while using his right hand to feed its entrails into his mouth—a classic iconographic representation celebrating his realization gained from meditating on the banks of the Ganges while discarding worldly concepts of purity by eating fish guts. His figure is framed by an undulating mandorla of stylized blue and purple cloud scrolls. The surrounding landscape evokes a remote wilderness appropriate for ascetic practice. He is flanked by green mountains with white peaks wrapped in purple vapor, with a single stylized blue tree standing on the right. The upper sky consists of a deep blue band with horizontal, layered formations of green and purple clouds. The foreground features a green meadow dotted with small white blossoms, opening onto a small body of water along the very bottom edge. The work displays a charmingly folkish or regional aesthetic with an earthy palette. Size. 33 x 25.5 cm Provenance: from the collection of a prominent former European diplomat Note *This lot is sold without a reserve Luipa (the Fish-Gut Eater) is one of the most celebrated figures among the 84 Mahasiddhas of Vajrayana Buddhism. Originally an Indian prince, he renounced his throne to become a wandering ascetic. To help him shatter his lingering royal pride and conventional concepts of purity, a dakini gave him rotting fish entrails to eat, prompting a profound spiritual awakening. For twelve years, Luipa meditated on the banks of the Ganges River, sustaining himself solely on the fish guts (lui) discarded by fishermen, ultimately achieving supreme realization (mahamudra). In Tibetan art, his iconography is unmistakable: he is depicted as a bearded yogi seated on a leopard or tiger skin, holding a large fish and feeding its entrails into his mouth. Beyond his legendary ascetic life, Luipa is revered as the founder of the influential Luipa Tradition (Lui-lugs) of the Chakrasamvara Tantra, one of the highest yoga tantras still actively practiced in Tibetan Buddhism today.
Condition:Condition Report The thangka exhibits visible signs of age, including a network of creasing across the canvas surface, minor pigment flaking, and general surface abrasion. Mild staining and wear are present along the upper margin and right background area. Despite these signs of historical wear, the central iconographic subject of the Mahasiddha, his distinctive action, and the supporting landscape features remain entirely recognizable.
