AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF BUDDHIST WHITE-GLAZED 'PAGODA-SHAPED' COVERED JARS WITH STANDS 唐代 白釉塔式供罐一对 China, Tang dynasty (618-907) each of excellently matched, regularized form, expertly potted in four modular sections comprising a multi-tiered pagoda-shaped cover, a globular jar body, a shallow basin-shaped receptacle, and a high splayed pedestal foot, the profile inspired by the Buddhist stupa structure; the cover meticulously fashioned as a towering pagoda finial resting on an inverted bowl-shaped base (anda); the jar body features a flared rim with a rounded lip, a constricted waist, and broad rounded shoulders tapering down to a flat base; all supported within a bowl-shaped stand terminating in a flared hollow foot ring; applied overall with a luminous, unctuous creamy-white glaze beautifully suffused with a network of fine, naturally formed ice-crackles resulting from the differential thermal expansion between the body and glaze, the glaze pooling elegantly and falling short of the lower foot to reveal a firm, dense milky-white body; preserved as a matched pair. H.39.5-39cm Provenance: -A Paris art instructor’s collection, acquired at Adjug'Art, Brest, 12th March 2024, lot 15. -From J.P Doan collection, reference 82 and sold in 2000. Note A comparative a closely related white-glazed pagoda-shaped jar of similar form, glaze and Buddhist ritual attribute, in the collection of the Henan Museum and the Shanxi Museum. The design of these distinctive pagoda-shaped jars (tashiguan) directly derives from the Buddhist stupa (stupa). Synthesizing Tang dynasty Buddhist devotion with the pinnacle of contemporary ceramic craftsmanship, the composition—featuring a pagoda-finial cover, a lotus-form or basin-shaped receptacle, and an elevated pedestal foot—was originally conceived as a sacred monastic offering vessel (gongyangqi) to enshrine holy relics or sacred sutras. Over the course of the Tang dynasty, this form was absorbed into the funerary practices of the aristocratic elite, evolving into ritual burial wares (mingqi) permeated with Buddhist piety, intended to facilitate the safe passage and salvation of the deceased in the afterlife. The fine network of ice-crackles suffused across the surface is a natural manifestation of historical aging, caused by the differential thermal expansion and contraction between the body and the glaze over centuries, rather than an intentional aesthetic effect created during firing. This crackle pattern serves as a testament to the antiquity and long-transmitted provenance of the vessels. Matched pairs of pagoda-shaped jars are significantly rarer than single examples; within the global connoisseurship and auction markets, their complete preservation, extreme scarcity, and profound spiritual resonance endow them with a commercial and cultural valuation far exceeding that of individual pieces. Comparable white-glazed pagoda-shaped jars of matching form, glaze profile, and Buddhist ritual significance are preserved in the prestigious collections of the Henan Museum and the Shanxi Museum, serving as vital benchmarks for the study of northern Chinese white porcelain production and Buddhist material culture during the Tang and Liao periods.
Condition:The pair is generally in good condition, with expected minor kiln adhesions and pinholes to the glaze surface consistent with their manufacture and period.
