AN ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL COVERED VESSEL, DOU 春秋-战国 青铜蟠虺纹盖豆 China, Eastern Zhou dynasty, Spring and Autumn or Warring States period (770–221 BC) The vessel is finely cast with a compressed globular body and a matching cover with a mother-and-son rim. The cover is surmounted by a flaring trumpet-shaped grip decorated with a band of thunder pattern (leiwen) to the inner ring, surrounded by a band of interlocking dragons (panhui) on a dense granulated ground. The bowl is flanked by a pair of symmetrical loop handles on the rounded sides, all supported on a tall, splayed pedestal foot decorated with stylized panhui pattern. Both the cover and the exterior body are densely adorned with intricate, seamlessly intertwined panhui patterns, executed with fluid, scrolling lines over a meticulously even granulated ground, demonstrating superb casting craftsmanship. H.19cm Provenance: A Paris art instructor’s collection, acquired from Dominique Giafferi, Drouot Paris, 24th May 2006, lot 154. Note A closely related bronze 'panhui' vessel (dou), Warring States period, is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, accession no. 中000109N000000000. (see image7) The bronze dou was an essential ritual food vessel from the Shang through the Warring States periods, evolving from early ceramic high-stemmed platters. Its fundamental structure comprises an upper bowl, a central high stem, and a splayed pedestal foot. During the Shang dynasty, dou vessels typically featured shallow bowls, thick stems, and lacked handles or covers. From the Western Zhou onwards, the bowl deepened while the stem became more slender. By the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, covers and loop handles became prevalent; the covers were topped with grips, and the rim adopted a interlocking 'mother-and-son' structure, showing a transition from archaic simplicity to a more robust and regularized silhouette. Rectangular dou (fangdou) emerged during the late Spring and Autumn period, characterized by a cover and body that fitted together like two conjoined measuring buckets. Core to its function, the dou was utilized to hold pickled vegetables, meat pastes, condiments, and grains like millet. It served as a centerpiece in aristocratic ancestral sacrifices, banquets, and funerary rituals, governed by a strict sumptuary system reflecting social hierarchy. The decoration of the dou evolved distinctively across different eras. Shang examples were dominated by taotie and leiwen (thunder patterns), projecting a solemn and mysterious aura. Western Zhou vessels frequently incorporated jiequ (abstract dragon motifs) and undulating bands, arranged in an elegant and orderly manner. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the decoration shifted toward dense and intricate panhui (interlocking small dragons), panchi (interlocking hydras), and hooked cloud motifs. These complex patterns were achieved through advanced techniques such as stamping, incising, copper inlay, or malachite inlay, often set against a background ground pattern—such as granulated or leiwen grounds—to elevate the primary motifs. The fluid, scrolling lines not only demonstrate the pinnacle of archaic casting craftsmanship but also embody the profound ritual music (liyue) culture and aesthetic sensibilities of the ancient Chinese elite.
Condition:The bronze is of a dense and solid quality, completely covered in a thick malachite-green patina interspersed with earthy adherence and cuprite red encrustations.
