A LARGE LOBED PARTLY GILT 'PHOENIX' SILVER BOX 辽代(或)银鎏金錾刻凤穿牡丹纹葵瓣形盖盒 China, Probbly PROBABLY LIAO DYNASTY (907–1125) H.12.2cm - L.52.5 x 35.8 cm The vessel is formed in an eight-lobed floral shape, with smooth, full curves. The lid is slightly domed, and the base is supported on a ring foot. The overall piece is finely crafted using hammering, engraving, and gilding techniques, representing a typical form of Liao dynasty gold and silver ware. Its stylistic and technical features are closely related to the gilt-silver phoenix-patterned lidded box preserved in the Liaoning Provincial Museum, reflecting a shared artistic tradition. The lid is decorated with a ground of fine “fish-roe” texture. At the center is a diamond-shaped floral medallion, within which a gilt-engraved phoenix is depicted. The phoenix has a plump and vigorous body, with outstretched wings and tail feathers curling like clouds. It is shown soaring among entwining peony branches. The engraved phoenix is rendered with bold, decisive lines, while the feather details are exquisitely precise. It retains the dignified elegance of Tang dynasty phoenix imagery while incorporating the concise and powerful aesthetic characteristic of the Khitan people, fully expressing the artistic taste of the steppe aristocracy. Surrounding the central medallion, each of the lobes contains smaller bird motifs, either in flight or perched, interwoven with scrolling floral vines. These continuous, winding tendrils harmonize with the central design, creating a lively and coherent composition. This segmented decorative layout closely corresponds to the compositional method seen in Liao dynasty phoenix-patterned gilt boxes in the Liaoning Provincial Museum. The exterior wall of the box body is divided into upper and lower registers, both engraved with scrolling floral motifs. The branches extend fluidly, and the flowers and leaves are full and lush. The contrast between the gilt decoration and the fine “fish-roe” ground creates a strong visual layering effect, enhancing the richness of the surface. This style is consistent with the Liao aristocratic tradition of decorating gold and silver objects in layered bands of floral scrollwork. Overall, the decoration centers on the phoenix and floral scrolls. The phoenix, king of birds, and the peony, symbolizing wealth and honor, together form the motif of “phoenix among peonies,” which conveys auspicious meanings of prosperity and flourishing fortune. This is a classic decorative theme in Liao dynasty gold and silver wares, continuing Tang artistic traditions while integrating the aesthetic sensibilities of steppe culture. The lobed form and engraving techniques reflect the Khitan aristocracy’s absorption and reinterpretation of Central Plains craftsmanship and Silk Road influences. The work embodies both the grandeur of nomadic artistic expression and the refinement of Chinese metalwork, serving as a valuable material testimony to cultural integration and metallurgical artistry in the Liao dynasty. 器身呈八瓣葵式造型,线条婉转饱满,盖面隆起,下承圈足,整体以捶揲、錾刻与鎏金工艺精工而成,为辽代金银器的典型形制,与辽宁省博物馆藏辽代凤纹金盖盒工艺范式一脉相承。盖面以鱼子纹为地,中心设菱花形开光,开光内鎏金錾刻一凤鸟,体态丰腴劲健,羽翼舒展,尾羽翻卷如云,振翅于缠枝牡丹花间,凤纹錾刻刚健利落,羽纹纤毫毕现,既承唐代凤纹的雍容气度,又融入契丹民族特有的简练雄浑风格,尽显草原贵族的审美意趣;开光外分瓣布局,每瓣内錾刻小禽鸟纹,或翔或栖,衬以缠枝卷草,枝蔓婉转连绵,与中心主纹呼应成趣,其分瓣式构图与辽博凤纹金盖盒的分区装饰手法高度相合。盒身外壁分上下两层錾刻缠枝花卉纹,枝蔓舒展,花叶饱满,鎏金纹饰与鱼子纹地形成鲜明对比,层次丰富,工艺精妙,与辽代贵族金银器以缠枝花卉分层装饰的范式完全契合。整体装饰以凤纹与缠枝花卉为核心,凤为百鸟之王,牡丹象征富贵,凤穿牡丹的题材寓意富贵吉祥、繁荣昌盛,是辽代金银器中承续唐代、融合草原文化审美意趣的经典吉祥纹样,葵瓣形制与錾刻工艺亦体现出草原贵族对中原工艺与丝路文化的吸收与再创造,兼具游牧文化的雄浑气度与中原工艺的细腻精巧,是辽代金银器工艺、民族文化交融的珍贵的实物例证。 Provenance: - A Paris art instructor’s collection, purchased at Tessier Sarrou, Paris, 17th June 2022, lot 284 -Formerly in the collection of Robert C.
