A MAGNIFICENT LONGQUAN CELADON PHOENIX HANDLED KINUTA VASE 南宋 龙泉青釉双凤耳纸槌瓶 China, Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) H.19.2cm The vase is robustly potted with a mallet-shaped body, featuring a dish-shaped mouth, a slender long neck, angular, sloping shoulders, a straight cylindrical body, and a shallow foot ring. The neck rises elegantly to a widely flared, dish-shaped rim and is flanked on either side by a pair of phoenix-shaped handles. The body is slightly thickly potted, lending the vessel a sense of weight and stability. It is covered overall, inside and out, with an even, lustrous meiziqing (plum-green) glaze of soft sea-green tone, pooling subtly in recesses and terminating in an irregular line just above the foot. The foot rim is left unglazed and dressed with a brown-ochre slip, revealing the neatly finished biscuit beneath. Provenance: A Paris art instructor’s collection, purchased at Thierry de Maigret, Paris, 12th June 2023, lot 479. Note Two closely related examples are preserved, one in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the other in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (formerly in the Barlow Collection), both illustrated in Sung Porcelains and Stoneware by Basil Gray, published by Faber and Faber, 1984. Longquan Celadon Glaze and the Origins of the Mallet-Shaped Vase (纸槌瓶) Longquan celadon, perfected during the Southern Song dynasty, is celebrated for its thick, translucent glaze, which displays a soft bluish-green tone reminiscent of polished jade. Achieving this refined surface required exceptional control over raw materials, glaze formulation, application, and a carefully regulated reducing kiln atmosphere. Successfully fired examples were comparatively rare and became highly prized for both their visual refinement and their sensuous, tactile quality. In Japan, such celadon wares came to be known as kinuta seiji (砧青磁), a term that reflects not only the admired bluish-green glaze but also the association with the mallet-shaped (kinuta) form. The term zhichui ping (纸槌瓶, “paper-mallet vase”) is believed to have first appeared in Ming dynasty records. It likely derives from the vessel’s resemblance to mallets used in traditional papermaking to beat and refine pulp. This technique may in turn have evolved from piaoxu (漂絮), the preparation of silk floss using a zhenchu (砧杵), or pounding tool. Although these implements share certain formal similarities, the precise design of papermaking mallets during the Song dynasty remains unknown. It is also uncertain whether the term zhichui ping was in contemporary use or was retrospectively applied by later Ming scholars. Given that the characters zhui (椎) and chui (槌) function as interchangeable variants, some scholars have suggested that the burnishing tool presented by Lin Bu during the Northern Song may have been a wooden huaimu zhichui, closely comparable in form to the mallet-shaped vase. The mallet-shaped profile itself likely reflects inspiration from Islamic glass vessels introduced into China during the Tang and early Song periods. Among Longquan celadons, most mallet-shaped vases are fitted with decorative handles modeled as phoenixes or dragon-fish. Such elements contribute to the overall balance of form while complementing the vessel’s refined silhouette. The harmonious integration of shape, glaze, and restrained ornamentation exemplifies the highest aesthetic ideals of Longquan ware.
