A RARE CARVED YAOZHOU CELADON BOWL WITH ‘PINEAPPLE’ MOTIF 宋代 耀州菠萝花纹斗笠盏 China, Song dynasty (960-1279) D.14.4cm Provenance: -Formerly in the collection of Dr.Maurin, France. -A Paris art instructor’s collection, purchased from Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 16-18th March 1987 Note A Yaozhou ware bowl with a similar decorative motif is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 11.8.7. (see image 4) The “pineapple” motif is one of the most representative and iconic medallion designs found on Yaozhou ware celadon of the Song dynasty, flourishing during the peak of Yaozhou kiln ceramic production and carved-and-molded decoration techniques. The design was not created in imitation of an actual pineapple, as the fruit is native to South America and was not introduced to China until the Ming dynasty. Instead, the motif evolved through a highly stylized and abstract transformation of traditional floral medallions and baoxianghua patterns. In later generations, it became popularly known as the “pineapple flower” motif because its dense central grid of dots and layered outer petals resemble the form of a pineapple. The pattern was typically arranged as a symmetrical floral roundel and was primarily used to decorate the interior centers of bowls, dishes, and cups. It was executed through the superb Yaozhou kiln techniques of carved decoration and molded stamping. Carved examples display sharp knife work, fluid lines, and rich tonal variation beneath the glaze, while molded designs are characterized by dense yet balanced compositions with strong symmetry and decorative fullness. The motif stands as a classic embodiment of the integration of popular aesthetics and ceramic ornamentation in Northern Song celadon, and today remains an important diagnostic pattern for the dating and identification of Yaozhou ware.
