A BROWNISH GLAZED LION SHAPED CANDLESTICK 南朝 酱釉狮形烛台 China, Southern dynasties period L.13cm Note Lion?shaped candlesticks are among the earliest examples of ceramic animal?form lighting vessels in China, with origins traceable to the Three Kingdoms and Six Dynasties periods (circa 220–589?AD) when ceramic technology and kiln production rapidly developed. During this era, alongside other animal forms such as sheep and mythical beasts, the lion motif emerged in glazed wares, particularly in celadon glazed examples from Western Jin kilns in the lower Yangtze region, where this type became especially refined both in modelling and glaze quality. Archaeological evidence shows that these candlesticks were used for illumination, featuring a hollow body and a tubular socket on the lion’s back for inserting a candle, dispelling earlier misconceptions that similar forms might have been water vessels. Over subsequent centuries, the form and use of lion?shaped candle holders continued to evolve: variants with multiple candle tubes appear in southern dynasties burials, and later ceramic examples are found in Tang sancai and Ming and Qing glazed wares, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the design. The lion itself, though not native to China, held potent symbolic meaning from early periods. Introduced through contact with Central Asian and Indian cultures and reinforced by Buddhist iconography, the lion came to be associated with protection, power, and auspicious guardianship, making it a fitting motif for both ritual and domestic objects.
